If Tiger Talked to FHP on December 1, Why Did We Learn It on December 30?
WESH-TV in Orlando, FL, reported yesterday afternoon that Florida Highway Patrol did eventually meet with Tiger Woods after being shunned away by Elin Nordegren, Mark Steinberg, and Woods' defense attorney Mark NeJame on three consecutive days. The meeting, according to FHP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes, was on December 1.
Montes said that troopers met with Woods at an undisclosed location to give Woods his $164 traffic citation and see if Woods had any visible injuries consistent with domestic abuse - the kind of domestic abuse now being widely reported because of Furman Bisher's posting of the Tiger Woods "real story" email that appears to have been first posted on GolfWRX.com by a guy who got the whole thing as a Facebook message, according to Deadspin.
In fact, WESH-TV cites Furman "Busher" (they STILL haven't corrected that) as insipiring their exclusive. They go on to say that FHP released this information because they were frustrated with "false reports" about Tiger's injuries. Wait, you mean Bisher's post? The one that confused Canada?
After the report came out, I immediately emailed Sgt. Montes wondering why the media at-large had not been informed of this news either at the same time as WESH-TV or shortly after December 1. Turns out that Sgt. Montes has been on vacation since the middle of December and will not be back until the new year.
Perhaps, then, the timing of this revelation has everything to do with Bisher's post and how it has gone viral? After all, seemingly everyone believes it except "amateur bloggers" like myself, Geoff Shackelford, Steph Wei, and Deadspin. And we pale in comparison to the UK's outlets that picked it up (the Daily Mail retracted), Perez Hilton, and such.
But, hey, TMZ didn't run with the email story. Is there a reason for such judiciousness on their part? Or is it actually true? I mean, who knows at this point if none, some, most, or all is true.
Either way, the skeptic in me has a number of questions that need to be raised about this whole situation:
- Why did WESH-TV quote Sgt. Montes in a 12/30 story when she is currently on vacation? Was this a special call to WESH-TV?
- Why tell ONLY WESH-TV? No offense, but they're a local TV station in Orlando. The is an international story with world-class journalists covering it and WESH-TV gets the exclusive? That's awfully fishy.
- It took the FHP almost an entire 24 hours to actually confirm that the report by WESH-TV was legitimate. Why? How could this have not been verified sooner?
- What, if anything, does the timing of this have to do the viral nature of Furman Bisher's posting of this Facebook message, lending it enough legitimacy that many reputable outlets published it?
- How true is what Bisher posted and was first relayed to a guy who goes by etsix at GolfWRX.com?
- And, most imporantly, why does the FHP care AT ALL about "false reports" of Woods' injuries? Their investigation is over, no criminal charges were filed, and Tiger Woods' traffic citation was delivered and paid. They have no role in any potential civil court matter. And they certainly don't have to care about rumors about the focus of a completed or active investigation. Maybe it wasn't the FHP who was so incensed.

December 1st - December 30th.
The long delay reporting of the December meeting, 29 days, has a somewhat shorter parallel.
The Escalade escapade occurred at 2:25AM – 911 call at about 2:30AM, the early hours after Thanksgiving day. The release of the information came at approximately 2:30 PM.- about 12 hours.
Additional questions somewhat justified by the two delays:
Who is managing the delays?
Why are the delays taking place?
What is being hidden?
These three questions can be added to the tall stack of questions still unanswered. There has been a lot of management of the news on somebody’s part.
Could it be a person who has a eye-catching yacht named “Privacy”?
Or maybe money is being passed about. Aw no – that couldn’t be.
Don't worry, nothing will be allright.

Speaking of non-gossip
I’m with ya Court, and I also want to go on record as being another “amateur blogger” who does not believe the email either (unless Ryan considers me a “professional” blogger ;o) Had the email a while ago, but never would have even dreamed of publishing it because it’s pure gossip.
We can’t control what Mr. Woods did or does, but we can control how we react to it.

have you considered that WESH had other things going on and just didn’t look or pursue this ? Now you’re making this out as a conspiracy between Tiger Woods and the FHP – somehow I doubt we’re going to find deep corruption over a $164 ticket.

You completely misquoted me, court. Here’s exactly what I said:
Here’s the thing. Furman Bisher is 92 years old. He retired from the AJC. He’s not getting another writing job – despite his tremendous talent, newspapers are not hiring guys with his experience. Based on conversations I had today (corroborated by Sal Johnson’s post today at Golf Observer), I found out that he operates his rarely-trafficked blog (see below, your Blogger blog has the same traffic as his) because he’s bored. Bored. He posted the email chain letter version of events because it was actually forwarded to him by someone in the industry.
I said he’s 92 with no implication of his age as a problem. He told Sal that he was bored and that’s why he maintains a blog. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING critical about that.
As for calling him “ground zero,” he actually is for the mainstream media picking up this story and investigating it. Why because it lent it legitimacy coming from him.

I posted this yesterday in the Furman Bisher thread…
“Now TMZ Sports is refuting this email…
"Cops: Tiger Woods Had a ‘Fat Lip’
Posted Dec 30th 2009 5:35PM by TMZ Staff
Tiger Woods met with the Florida Highway Patrol three days after his November 27 car crash — and according to cops, Tiger was sportin’ a "fat lip."
An FHP spokesman confirmed that Tiger met with troopers at an undisclosed location on Dec. 1 to receive his traffic ticket — and officers reported they only observed a "fat lip" on Tiger’s face … no other facial injuries.
Officers also claim Tiger’s appearance gave them no reason to believe he was the victim of domestic violence"
….note well, I used the phrase…“Now TMZ sports is refuting this email”…actually, the FHP released the information to several Orlando news organizations simultaneously but per usual, TMZ was the first one to get it out in print and when I google TW, I found this story at TMZ. I thought that made it clear that the reason they were releasing this information now was in response to the viral email that Bisher had released on Dec 22nd, but just went public yesterday.

This is all madness………..which speaks to societies simplistic sadness. But soon there will be gladness…As Golf returns at Kapalua. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Tiger’s self exile could be good for the men’s game. Might bring a world tour that much closer, like I believe the woman’s game is already heading. The PGA is not all golf anymore, just a part of it, albiet still the biggest one. Happy new year all :)

I’m not following this thought, Ea. How does Tiger taking a few months off…when he wouldn’t be playing anyway…push us towards an “international” tour ? The PGA Tour plays non-stop from January through September. To have an international tour, you have to have really big holes in a tour where players have time and inclination to travel abroad. Most of the top players are already on the US PGA Tour – Tiger Woods stepping away does nothing except give the sponsors a little bit of leverage to drop the prices they are charged to host a PGA Tour event. Tiger was gone for more than half a season with the knee surgery and nothing collapsed. He’s not going to be gone nearly that long over this mess.

Well,
imagine more top players playing in China , say for a huge purse, followed that week by Australia. Then, say after the Open in July, some decide to play in the French open instead of returning to the US. This could happen faster if sponsors drop some weeks in the US and some tournaments become a non event. Tigers new exile might just hasten this process and we might see more of the top 50 outside the US some weeks than we do now…
by Easingwold on Jan 2, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
China is still another 6 or 7 time zones (assuming the cities they have played in China are where they would stay). The US PGA players already go over to The Open a week or two ahead of time to adjust. Now you want them to go even further the FOLLOWING week ? They take the week off after The Open to come home. Now you’re saying that they would take 4-6 weeks off of the PGA Tour, where they are playing for spots in the FEC playoffs and the money list.
July in Australia is the middle of winter. That’s not going to happen.
You still have to have a serious collapse in PGA Tour sponsorship to have that kind of a hole happen where players will take 6 weeks off (WITH the PGA coming up) to play 3 tournaments instead of 3 weeks off and playing 2.

C'mon, court,
Europeans have always traveled this way and ruled the world doing it.. The west coast is 8 time zones from London. Australia could be played in January, like tennis, instead of Hawaii..the majors would still be played when they are. But the so called world events could be spread around the globe and the calendar year…that would only be good for golf. I agree it would take a serious collapse of PGA tour sponsorship, but the American season is far too long in any case and could use trimming down to fit in with the NFL , NBA etc. and the rest of the world would have some big events they deserve. Sometimes Americans can be forgiven for thinking golf is a national sport within America, but it is so much bigger than any one country. A golfing pro moaning about time zones when he can go in his private jet will not wash these days. Can you imgaine Mickleson having to travel like Gary Player had to ? Look at Els…he managed quite well thank you. It’s too late for Mickleson, but the younger generation might not mind so much. it could happen, don’t you think ?
by Easingwold on Jan 3, 2010 6:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ruled the world ? Not sure what you mean.
The best Europeans are playing full time on the PGA Tour because that’s where the best money is right now. If that changes, they will go to whatever tour will offer the biggest paycheck….so will the Americans. They aren’t travelling from Europe to play in the States, they LIVE in the States and travel in the 4 US time zones.
Yes – Els chose to travel the world when he was younger, and he always started off well and faded as the season went on. When he got into his 30’s, he cut back on his international schedule and stayed mostly in the US.
I agree with you – if they HAD to travel – but they DON’T have to travel like Gary Player – but you can’t make that argument because the money has changed so dramatically from the 60’s and 70’s to now. I’d still like to see a few of the top guys try to play a schedule like the guys did back in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s when they would play a tournament and hop into the car to drive to the next tournament and do that 30 weeks out of the year.

I was refering to 20 years ago..
when Seve, Faldo, Langer, Woosnam and Lyle were the top 5 in the world to show it could be done. They didn’t live in the US full time, they played many events in Europe too. I can’t always agree about the money, I still think greats of the game play for titles and money takes care of itself. Poulter spends more time in the states, than say Harrington and Westwood. About having to travel…the senario I’m putting to you is if the top 10 played in China and the far east for a month, the 11th to 50th would have to follow ( a world event for instance), it would all depend where the biggest ranking points are. After all, the top 50 wants to be in all 4 majors. It would be interesting to see how todays pampered pros would cope with the game 50 years ago…in Europe, Langer for quite a few years did just that in the late’70’s…drove a VW van around Europe week to week. Times have changed for sure.

Be serious – if you got an offer from your boss to make $100k and you didn’t have to leave your country – or make $50k and you had to travel thousands of miles every week, paying your own travel expenses – which one would you take ? It doesn’t matter what they did 20 years ago – it matters what guys do now.

I am...
I’m saying that boss that used to offer 100k might offer 50k in 5 years…and the one in the far east might offer the 100k instead. the more non US winners take the spoils, the more it is likely it would happen..the LPGA is proving that now. Do you think the American viewing public would watch the PGA if there were no Americans in the top 10 like they do now when Tiger and Phil are playing ?
by Easingwold on Jan 3, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It depends on who is in the top 10 and who is #1. People watched when Norman and Faldo were #1 and there were very few Americans in the top 10. Golf fans have proven that they want to watch good golf. This period with Tiger Woods isn’t going to last – so it’s going to fall on the shoulders of the rest of the tour to learn how to win and not just see who fails the best from week to week. We’ve been spoiled by Tiger.
I don’t know anybody with a crystal ball that actually works like that. “If’s” and “Might’s” aren’t going to do you much good in your scenario – and here’s why…
Tournament organizers want the best fields they can get. Right now, players make the most money playing their season on the PGA Tour. China has the cash to put together a few tournaments that will draw the big names with under the table money because everything is run by the government. They may put a corporate name on the tournament, but if they want something, the government will back it because they run everything anyway. It just looks better to have a corporate name on the marquis. Australia will pony up money for a few guys, but mostly to Tiger Woods because he is the only true draw.
These guys are independent contractors. If it is in their best interest to travel – they will travel – but if it’s better to live on the US PGA Tour and not have the extra expenses – then they will do that. IF the big money abroad comes like you’re saying – some guys will take it.

As things are now, I agree with you..
I tend to look at tennis as a level playing field, with all players having to compete worldwide. I think golf would be a better game if players did the same, but with 3 majors in the US, thats not going to happen in the same way. The world events and Presidents cup tend to stay Stateside because of TV, I would rather see those scattered around the globe at different times of the year to make golf more of a level playing field. When I look at international sports they have all drifted to more of a global game, I don’t see golf as any different. Money is at the root of it all of course and you are right, if the US continues to pay out the most, it won’t change, but nothing goes on forever.
by Easingwold on Jan 3, 2010 12:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Tennis doesn’t have half a dozen different tours for these guys to choose from – you earn your ranking points at different levels of tournaments – but there aren’t different membership circuits.
But I will guarantee you that if they could play their 15-20 tournaments on one continent and only travel for majors – they would jump at the chance.

It depends on the money and what is required of the players. Modern sports depend so much on TV dollars, and American TV is still king – but I can’t see American TV getting behind golf that won’t be seen live 2/3’s or even 3/4’s of the year depending on where they are playing. I don’t think the top players will play as much if they have to travel the whole year, which means fields will be watered down if there is only one tournament a week.
