AT&T Ends Sponsorship With Woods - Is His July Tournament Next?

Bloomberg's Crayton Harrison (with Mike Buteau) reports this morning that AT&T is dropping Tiger Woods and ending their sponsorship agreement with him.

"We are ending our sponsorship agreement with Tiger Woods and wish him well in the future," said a spokesman for AT&T.

AT&T appeared on Woods' golf bag in 2009, though, after Buick dropped Woods as sponsor because of General Motors' bankruptcy.

Woods and AT&T began their relationship in 2007 when AT&T was enlisted to serve as title sponsor for his PGA Tour event known as the AT&T National, held annually on July 4th weekend in Washington, DC.  Due to host course Congressional hosting the US Open in 2011, the tournament is going to be played for the next two seasons in Philadelphia at Aronimink CC.

The Associated Press says that Tiger Woods will not serve as AT&T National host in 2010 provided Woods remains on an indefinite leave from the sport.  The Tiger Woods Foundation will remain primary beneficiary of the tournament.  The statements were attributed to the PGA Tour's Ty Votaw.

AT&T has said it will also maintain its sponsorship of the tournament.  Primarily, it is the contractual obligation to sponsor the event through 2014 that will keep AT&T involved in the Woods event.

That should silence speculation that there might be a change at title sponsor for the National.  The PGA Tour has two open tournaments without title sponsors - events at Torrey Pines and Quail Hollow in Charlotte.  It has been reported previously that Quail Hollow CC will likely allow its contract with the Tour to expire in 2014 as it may be seeking to host a major championship like the PGA Championship.

Any kind of sponsorship change for AT&T would be rendered moot anyhow since Woods plays the Torrey Pines event each year.  They also sponsor the event at Pebble Beach, which Woods would likely have played in preparation for the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach were he not on an indefinite leave from the sport.

Finally, CNBC's Darren Rovell wonders who will replace Woods on his bag.  He notes that David Dusek of golf.com is already speculating that Nike will have their logo in AT&T's place.  Rovell also notes that the next sponsor that may go is Chevron - like AT&T, a sponsor of Woods' tournaments and foundation activities.

I really hate misleading headlines

Semantic accuracy – RB – please. The tournament is not “Tiger’s Tournament”. There isn’t a single dollar of Tiger’s money involved in this tournament. He was/is the ceremonial host.

The tournament, at least for the next few years is sponsored by AT&T.

I realize that these words are above – but the sequence and headline attempts to point in the opposite direction.

The problem will come if Tiger wants to remain the host, but since the Tiger Woods Foundation will remain the main charity, I doubt he would endanger the foundation.

Why semantic accuracy now but not when it comes to the word “duped”?

Actually, it’s semantically accurate because everyone on planet earth calls it “Tiger’s tournament.”

How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg. ~Abraham Lincoln

Just because a whole bunch of people CALL it Tiger’s Tournament doesn’t actually MAKE it Tiger’s tournament. I thought I had you straightened out on that whole “perception is reality” bunk :-)

What do you call the Memorial colloquially? Jack’s tournament. The Colonial? Hogan’s tournament. Can’t be. He’s dead.

we call you RB – does “RB” appear on your driver’s license as your name ? Why was John F Kennedy called “Jack” ?

It doesn’t matter what something is known as colloquially – that makes it a nickname – not the correct name.

what’s a “rat guard”

lol – I’ve answered that one before – you wanted to go by a dictionary definition of “duped”, but didn’t want to include the practical connotations that go with the word.

I would be glad to include any “practical connotations” that go with the word “duped”, but you didn’t include any. What you tried to say is that you can’t be duped if you don’t care, or if you don’t have anything invested in the belief(which is just a crock of BS) or other such nonsense, all documented in the “TW did not dupe us” thread. Here is my absolute last attempt (this year) to prove to you that you are indeed a moron.
You say you weren’t duped by TW. OK then, did you know before the NE revelations of Nov 25th that TW was cheating on his wife? If you say yes, then you indeed were not duped…but then the question is how did you know? You certainly didn’t get that information from TW or the media…maybe you had inside info, but then you never posted that here. But if you say, no, you did not know that TW was a cheating philanderer before the NE article, then you were duped just like the rest of us. And don’t say you weren’t duped because you didn’t care because I didn’t care either. The point is the truth is a real entity; it is not some abstraction that changes for different people; the truth was/is that TW was cheating on his wife, and you didn’t know that truth mainly because TW duped you, along with help from the media and PGA rour players some of whom knew but didn’t release that information.
Happy New Year…I hate to ruin this past year, but you were duped by TW….my only question is why you care so much about being duped that you would actually lie about it?
I know why for F&G, he’s an idiot!

Duped as I see it...

is someone who believes in an image of someone, which in most cases isn’t that person anyway…and it comes crashing down when the media can’t support it any longer. The “fairytale” if you like. Tiger lied about family coming first. That could be seen as different…ie he lied to the public. Many here are saying they didn’t believe in the fairytale is all. Niblic obviously did.

by Easingwold on Jan 2, 2010 12:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

OK, now we’re getting somewhere…you say many here didn’t believe in the fairytale, ie. which is just another way of saying that many didn’t believe Tiger when he said “Family comes first….Always!”. OK, if you or anyone else did not believe that, then what did you know to base your disbelief on?

And how is lying to the public, different than duping the public? Tiger lied to the public; the media, or at least some of the media, and some PGA tour players, knew the truth about Tiger’s philandering and they covered up for TW and allowed him to dupe the public. Of course I believed that Tiger was a faithful married man because I had no reason, ie information that he wasn’t, to believe otherwise. Ergo, I was duped. Unless you can tell my why exactly you did not believe that Tiger was a happily married family man, then you were also duped. go ahead, any of you can answer.

Yeah, me too, but I rarely leave a comment….There’s a couple of wingnuts over there now…But it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. I gotta be honest here, this whole Tiger thing has me really bummed. I assiduously avoid anything about him now. I’ve really had enough. Our old buddy Macer says he’s not going to watch golf until Tiger comes back….I’m pretty close to that myself… You know how you should never say never…. Maybe it’s just the Winter doldrums….I know 3i’s would brand me a “suck up”, but I’m not. Tiger Woods brought a level of excitement to pro golf. Trying to hype Phil or Rory M. or Ishikawa seems almost forced….And to add insult to injury I’m on a winter diet with no more Martinis, Gimlets, Negronis or visits with Dr. Jack until I drop some serious weight…In about four days I’m going into pasta withdrawal…. The Colts gave a way a perfect season….man I hope they know what they’re doin’….. Gotta go…time for another frakin’ salad… Happy New Year?….Yeah right!

so it will be again. Listen, I know Tiger is exciting at times, but when he is out of contention we still have to watch him pick his nose, eat a sandwich and run for the port-a-potty, missing great shots by the leaders. I don’t need tiger to enjoy golf…..I enjoy it on Wed when someone in our group makes a great shot or shoots a low round…..it’s all about expectations and the Tiger suck-ups don’t have a golf history, and only know Tiger. Watch Tigerless golf and you will enjoy it.

I don’t need to know the faces or the names……a great golf shot or a great round is special, no matter who has his/her hands on the grip. But it’s also fun to root for somebody. I thought it was Phil for you? Yes, I’m with you from the standpoint that I was watching long before Tiger and will as long as I’m in this world; heck I would even watch 3irons play. But viewing sports is more fun when you are pulling for somebody. It’s no different than you pulling for the Saints or LSU, it adds excitement and a higher level of entertainment.

by tigerhead on Jan 1, 2010 9:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Tigerhead......Sure, it's great to have someone to cheer for,

but not necessary. I watch NW Tour, LPGA, EURO Tour and can sit there for hours and watch great golf and not know any of the players….great shot, great golf. Now as for your comment about players in the NFL (Saints) or LSU is not a good comparison. The NBA, NFL, MLB and other leagues are full of scumbags, but first…..I don’t play any of those sports anymore, and second….my expectations of the players is very low to start with. If Peyton Manning or Drew Brees or Tony Dungee were found to be cheating on their wives, I would most certainly feel the same way I do about Tiger, because I have higher expectations of them based on the image they portray to their fans. I don’t conveniently try to separate their professional lives from their personal lives….their personal lives are what make them the highly respected athletes they are. So, yes I would stop pulling for them, very easy question to answer. WHO DAT!

Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!

by em66 on Jan 1, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting point..

But hmmmm, are you saying that because you have a lower expectation of someone it’s somehow not as bad? Seems like a bit of a double standard to me.

Roll Tide !!

by tigerhead on Jan 1, 2010 10:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not at all....ususally that that lower

expectation is a result of something that I’ve learned about that person. Here’s a good example. Nick Saban, coached LSU to a national championship….everything we knew about him lead me to have a very low expectation of him and while I cheered for LSU, I thought Saban was a scumbag. So when he left, I wasn’t surprised or disappointed because of the kind of person he was. I dislike Florida with a passion, but I think Tebow is one of the finest players in history, because of the person he is. This stuff isn’t rocket science Tigerhead, I’m not sure why you can’t grasp it……lol

Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!

by em66 on Jan 1, 2010 10:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not rocket science, true

But to imply a behavior is more acceptable from one group, (with a lower expectation) than another (golfers), is indeed a double standard. Expectations can be very misleading to begin with. An apple it still an apple and an orange is still an orange no matter how you slice them or what you expected of them before you sliced them.

Roll Tide !!

by tigerhead on Jan 1, 2010 10:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but some apples are rotten and some oranges

are rotten. You can’t separate the image of an apple or orange from what is inside…..whether rotten or ripe. There is no double standard, but a matter of the image you portray. The expectation of getting a ripe apple, but biting into a rotten one is what I am talking about. Rotten is rotten no matter who it is, but if the apple looks rotten when I pick it up, then the realization of rottenness when I bite it is not as surprising and should have been expected.

I get you...

And I understand why Tiger’s behavior is disappointing to so many. I’m also offended by it. I’m just challenging the concept that his private life is linked directly to the game of golf. I don’t think it is and I can continue to enjoy his golf because his private life is none of my business. Besides, it’s his golf that made him famous in the first place, not the other way around.

Roll Tide !!

by tigerhead on Jan 1, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Tigerhead.......Another example.......(that doesn't deal with fruit) lol

John Daly…..what are the expectations of JD…..I would say pretty low. While most of us hope he can some how stop the self destructive live style, we are not surprised when he screws up again. But, JD is not trying to portray a fine upstanding family man as his image. Tiger has always "seemed’’ to have it all together and has gone to great lengths to convince us he was this great family man of very high standards, so when he fails we are all surprised and disappointed. Two different standards for two different people, not a double standard because they chose the standard that we were given to believe. JD is a golfer with a lot of baggage and when you see him you think about that baggage…..you can’t separate it from the golfer. Now Tiger has even more baggage and you may think you can separate it, but you won’t be able to. You will think about every time you see him. A recent poll shows his “high opinion of” rating down to 5% from 88%……most people don’t feel like you do.

Saints are killing me!!!!!!!!

by em66 on Jan 1, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Trust me

I can indeed separate it, maybe that’s just me though. The Daly thing is a good example. Yes, I have a very low expectation of him and I’m never surprised when he screws up. My point is, I believe it is equally bad regardless of the pre-existing expectations. I’m not super religious, but I believe in the eyes of God it would be judged equally.

It’s not only the tournament by tournament thing with Tiger Woods. It was the whole impending “breaking Jack’s record” that created a big buzz. Sure Tiger was over exposed, but for those ten or eleven years he was off the charts. Five and six wins a season became the norm for him.. Think for a moment how long that U.S. Open record stood before Woods broke it. And not just broke it, obliterated it! Maybe I’m not the purist I thought I was. Golf in the 90’s exciting? Faldo? Great golf, but exciting? Norman? Defined the word “choke”…. F&G: I agree GOLF is good, PROFESSIONAL GOLF…not so much. Tiger Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, celebrates New Year’s at chalet in France near Chamonix resort
BY Tracy Connor
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Saturday, January 2nd 2010, 8:47 AM

Tiger Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, celebrated New Year’s without him at a chalet in France near the swank Chamonix resort. She spent the holidays with her nearest and dearest.

Tiger Woods was recently linked once again to alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel. CLICK HERE for more of Woods’ gal pals.
Tiger Woods’ wife has taken her heartbreak to new heights – the French alps.
Scorned Swedish beauty Elin Nordegren headed to an $8,000-a-night chalet near the swank resort of Chamonix to celebrate New Year’s with her nearest and dearest.

And that didn’t include the golf great who was unmasked in November as a serial philanderer with a dozen mistresses.

Nordegren, 29, arrived in France a couple of days after Christmas with her twin sister Josefin and five close pals, London’s Sun reported Saturday.

They stayed in a posh seven-bedroom chalet away from the main resort, and the mother-of-two spent most of her time inside.

She did venture out once to hit the slopes but turned back because of rain, and she had a expensive dinner with friends on New Year’s Eve, the paper said.

Woods, 33, was nowhere in sight – and he hasn’t been seen with Nordegren since he crashed his SUV outside their Florida home the morning after Thanksgiving.

The murky circumstances of the crash unleashed an avalanche of reports that the athlete had been cheating on his wife with cocktail waitresses and porn stars for years.

“Elin wanted to take her family and close friends away from the minefield Tiger has created by his behavior,” an insider told the Sun.

“She has been absolutely torn to pieces by what he has done to her. But she still sees a future with Tiger because of the beautiful children they have.

“She told him she needed a lengthy time apart to reflect on how they might possibly salvage the marriage.”

I sense some sarcasm in your post, Tigerhead, but this is the crux of the matter…

“"She has been absolutely torn to pieces by what he has done to her. But she still sees a future with Tiger because of the beautiful children they have.

"She told him she needed a lengthy time apart to reflect on how they might possibly salvage the marriage."

…we have been bombarded by the media that Elin is planning on divorcing Tiger, this article says what Lee Corso says, “Not so fast my friend”. All of you Tiger fans are probably hoping for a quick divorce as that will get your hero back on tour fastest. I am actually hoping that they decide to try and save their marriage; but that will keep Tiger off tour longer. Note well, I said I’m “hoping”(for all of you for whom words matter, unlike courtgolf and F&G), I don’t expect Woods to accept Elin’s terms for saving their marriage. TW has proven he’s a great golfer, he’s also proven that he’s a first class cad and a moral degenerate.

Elin is telling friends she is getting 180 million pounds settlement from Tiger…who knows if she is laughing or crying ? None of us for sure.

I also hope

they can save the marriage. If they love each other and BOTH want to save it, they may have a chance at doing so. Golf can wait till then if need be.

Here's what I hope.....

Tiger changes his stripes……in that he sincerely is repentant of his “actions” and that he and Elin can work things out and save the marriage. I would then hope to see a “humble” Tiger return to the tour, without his arrogance, filthy mouth and temper. A fan friendly, humble Tiger could take him to new heights of popularity and at the same time might just earn him a measure of respect. He wouldn’t have to win, just have the right attitude. Well, that’s what I hope…..but we’ll see, it’s hard for a cat to change his stripes.

Well said em66

And that could happen. I’ve said this a few times during all of this, but I believe this needed to happen and that it will end up being good for him as a human being. He needed to get knocked down hard and humbled. The real story now is how will he pick himself back up and what (if anything) will he learn from it. Does he pull a John Daly and just keep on making the same mistakes or does he learn his lessons and use it to become better. It’s the kind of thing that can lead to profound change. I do believe in life we learn far more from our failures than our successes; that is if you’re paying attention. Time will tell the rest of the story.

I concur sir..

Tigerhead, our boy needed some perspective in his life. His fantastic golf has placed him on such a pedestal, that he needed to be brought down to earth, just to get back in touch with reality. I agree that good can come from this, but it’s up to TW. I have always enjoyed his golf, but even for me his abrasiveness was hard to watch. I hope he accepts the responsibility for his actions, and sits down and reevaluates his life. I also hope he can see who his friends are. You learn alot about people when you actually need them. As for the “haters” it’s all good. They needed something to cheer for. He’s only beaten them down for 14 seasons. Rejoice you throng of losers. Nibs keep sifting through those trash cans. Keep us posted.

F&G(Humpty Dumpty and now a new nickname, the Janeane Garofalo of waggleroom),
Who are these haters you speak about? They (“the haters”) needed something to cheer for? Hmmm, it seems like “the haters” are cheering for the same thing that you and Tigerhead are cheering for, ie. that Tiger works to save his marriage and become a better person, husband, and father. “He’s only beaten them (”the haters") down for 14 seasons."….Now how could this possibly be since this has only been known about for the past month? You keep mistakenly comparing Tiger’s philandering to his golf, when I and various other rational people, have repeatedly corrected you that this has NOTHING to do with Tiger’s golf.
You have proven yourself to be a low class jackass, compared to you, Tiger is a saint!

I only know the man for his golf. All else is his business. I agree with you on your point though….Nothing you post on this Golf blog has anything to do with golf. Why is that? Why are you so hurt that this man cheated on his wife?? I hope he fixes his life, but it’s because i want to see him back on course. You see i don’t know him. Yes i wish him and his family well, but selfishly i want to see him break more records, and play the game with the flair he always has. But that’s just me young lady. You have your motivations and i have mine. When he returns you’ll be the one with the sign “Philanderer” , and you’ll be in Vegas placing bets on things like. When will Tiger retire, or when will his wife divorce him. That is all fine with me. Because; he duped you, and you felt like a jilted blonde. I feel your pain. F&G"s

Millions of sheep were duped. Many knew Woods wasn’t for real, and a few knew about his sexual appetite. I never saw that part of it coming, as I’d have sooner believed he was “juice’n” than bangin bimbo’s. I go along with EM66 as to who/what I cheer for. I respect guys/gals who can hit the required shots when it counts. To me it doesn’t matter who , because I have the utmost respect for the difficulty involved in trying to execute under pressure. Every week, somebody’s gonna win by hittin some great shots, and every week I have a reason to cheer. Those who only watch when Woods plays are not golf fans, they’re icon worshippers. When Woods plays well, I give him his due as a player. However, he has never been representative of the term “professional” and I have no respect for his behavior. Now this “bimbo marathon” has dulled his lustre even more. He won’t change because it doesn’t matter to him. I believe he will do his best to be a good father to his kids, but his giolf will take priority over his being a good husband. Divorce is the only way for him to move forward because he will never agree to the scrutiny that Elin will demand of him. It’s not who he is. Tiger has and always will be “about Tiger”. He’ll put his golf first and we’ll see him at Augusta. He may be a few $$$ poorer, but it’s not about money for Woods. It’s about records,… on and perhaps off the course. When you hang with M.J., Charles Barkley, A-Rod and Jeter, you can rest assured a tally is being kept. Tiger married because it fit the image they wanted to create. But it was a lie. Tigers do not change their stripes. So it will be business as usual for TW in 2010. Poor husband doesn’t mean he’ll be a poor father. I sincerely hope he succeeeds as a dad..As a player/professional he has some catchin’ up to do……………………..Z.

My problem with some of the pros. is this. They’re in it strictly for the money. I see guys winning tournaments, resting on their laurels, and just going away. I see players winning majors,,doing the talk show circuit, and not winning again for years. I see players playing well, and just for money changing equipment, and regressing. Now these are not professional traits in my opinion. Two seasons ago Phil had a chance to seize the day, and what did he do…disappear. I don’t want this Sergio nonsense, he hasn’t earned the stardom he’s been given.. I see super talented players not threatening leaderboards..I see young guns being given greatness, without going out and earning it on course. I see all this and i long for professional golfers. Give me more Zach Johnson’s, Furyk’s, Paddy’s and Vijay’s……These are pro’s, and they always are there. I don’t want to see the yippee i took third, cashed my $400k check, and checked out for a few months. I don’t want to see players trying to peak for the fall series, because they know the tourneys will be watered down. Just me though…I want professionals, and i want guys who want to win. I want pros who want to be champions. Because i don’t like this Money golf i’ve been witnessing. I am not duped, i can see when a player is playing like a champion, vs. like a survivor. I respect guys winning, but not settling. I respect risk takers, who are trying to get better. I will be watching, but i want Great Golf. If they have the talent, then they should utilize it. That’s what i want. Professionalism.

If you agree with that 3irons..

then I think you just joined the Tiger fan club. F&G said nothing about behavior or off course lifestyle there. He’s talking about the will to win. He’s talking about what makes the game exciting to watch. He’s talking about the unbridled passion for winning that Tiger has vs the pay check players that are perfectly content with 3rd place. If that is your definition of “what it means to be a professional” (and that’s what you just said), then Tiger passes with flying colors and most of the rest fail. But hey, at least the “top 10 player” is good guy right. Welcome to the fan club, we’re glad to have you….lol

Whoops posting snafu...

Let me start again…. 3irons you should know better. The very definition of “professional” is you play for MONEY!! Not a gift certificate at the Pro Shop. They PLAY for a living, winning is an ocassional bonus for most pros (the exception being Tiger Woods). This sports ENTERTAINMENT gentlemen. WE PAY TO WATCH! If you enjoy watching zombies like Furyk, Johnson, Leonard and Gay that’s fine. Give me “unbridled passion” every time… I know it’s not always pretty and definetely not PC, but DAMN it’s fun to watch… F&G: your “Anser” post came in while I was writing this. That’s very good!

I was a “professional” greenskeeper. The thought of going out there and walk mowing 18 greens “for the good of the game” never once entered my mind. Volunteering to install or repair an irrigation line in December in the Midwest, not a chance.

Best get your reading glasses adjusted t-pot !

Clearly I was referencing F&G"s comment regarding “serious” professionals as in Johnson,Furyk, Paddy and VJ. GUYS WHO ARE DEDICATED TO THEIR CRAFT, both on and off the course. Clearly Woods is a one dimensional player in that he has/had great talent. But he has never been, and barring a 180* reversal in attitude, never will be a complete professional. His arrogance and overwhelming sense of entitlement have landed him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A real professional knows how to play, how to interact with the fans and clearly does not carelessly put himself in postions that are harmful to the image the PGA Tour tries to project to the public. As I’ve said for years, “he’s a great player, but a piss poor professional”. He is nowhere near the calibre of Arnold or Jack or even Mickelson. WIthout an attitude adjustment, he never will be. He’ll be viewed as a great player with questionable morals. That sordid history will be right there alongside his major victory count, and there is nothing short of reinventing himself, that can change that for all time. So , as a professional, I’d hardly say I’m in TW’s corner at this time…………..Z.

But brother,…he has a lot of fence mending to do, and Honestly,…I don’t think he’s gonna change. Divorce will let him concentarte on his golf as I’m convinced his days as a husband are finished. Doesn’t mean he won’t be a good father to his kids, but I believe he feels golf and his lifestyle are far more important than making it work with Elin.(if she’d even take him back) If he’s back playin’ at Augusta, I think we’ll know his priorities. Hi Wendy!

You be very careful with joking about my diet! I’m worse than a woman with PMS!!! I know the field…I only used Ben Crane for dramatic effect… And one more thing, I’d love to enjoy a beer or four! But alcohol isn’t on the table for several weeks yet…and then it’s 4 oz of red wine… 4 OUNCES!!!! That’s half a cup, one eight of a quart…. Not much of a litre… I’m on The Golfers Diet – Lot’s of greens….. I just polished off a big bowl of turkeyball cabbage soup…. For those of you unfamiliar with a meatball made from ground turkey, it tastes only slightly better than an eraser…. In about two weeks I’d sell my soul for a glazed donut…. Wen: did you catch that spelling of “LITRE”…. That was for you!

Wot an honor! That one's for you.

What do you call a man who is worse than a woman with PMS? Ping!!!!

You know the field, but I like half of ‘em (no, not you em, not that I don’t like you, of course, but well, you know).

I have only put on 2lbs. over Christmas/New Year (with no golf as course is frozen solid) so I am carefully measuring out my FIRST 4oz glass of red wine for the evening, (thinks….shall I have a G&T first or maybe a swift half of Hampshire Special Brew?) to accompany the roast beef, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, gravy, et al accompanied by yet another portion of the bl****dy Christmas pudding. (Kick ‘em while they’re down, I say. No, not you em, I was refering to kicking Ping).

This diet business is easy-peasy – just smaller portions on smaller plates. AND MORE GOLF of course. Cheers!!

Turkeyball Cabbage Soup

Honestly CG, it’s not bad. Has a broth with Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme. It’s the South Beach Diet that we’re doing…. I’m very familiar with it, and that’s not a good thing… Wendy: Only 2 pounds!!!! I gained five after dinner at the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. Smaller portions and smaller plates? Only rookie dieters are fooled by that ruse. I would hasten point out the calories burned playing golf are about as much as walking….you do walk don’t you? The broth sounds good actually

I confess that I was a rookie dieter. The only time I gained weight was when I was in the Middle East – incredible food – eating out too often – no exercise. Going on a diet on our return to UK, however, was the only way I could look after my husband’s health. We both love cooking and eating, so smaller portions were the only sensible option for life. “4 roast potatoes doesn’t mean I love you less, 10 roast potatoes doesn’t mean I love you more, darling!”. Yes, we do walk the course – given 3 cart tokens by our club last year which we only use when temperature reaches 75+, so still have one left!!!!

I do like Kate Moss – even tho’ she is younger, taller and prettier than me. I think my golf handicap is lower than hers, however, which is more important, n’est-ce-pas?

I’ve had enough of “The Tiger Woods Saga”. I don’t know if Kate Moss plays… My guess is she wouldn’t know a driver from a putter. I’m sure you’ll knock off those two pounds when the sun comes out. Potatoes are verboten on this diet. I dearly love potatoes, roasted or baked with sour cream, cheddar cheese, bacon bits and butter. We call that a “loaded baked potato”. But I look forweard to the time when riding our tandem uphill won’t be such a strain. Best Wishes for 2010!

Thats not to say at times is it amazing to watch…all the money in the world means nothing when one watched Usain Bolt destroy records the way he did. Why can he not work on his marriage and play golf at the same time? Don’t 99% of people who are having marital problems still have to go to work? Look at the other side, too – there is the resentment factor. If one or the other of them feels forced, there will be resentment, and that’s never good. Tiger wants Nicklaus’ record – if she “makes” him stay home – he’ll resent her for it. If he stays home because he thinks he has to and is around 24/7 like he has never been before, she won’t know if he can be trusted away from home.

Either way – there are Catch22 situations.

How many of you would give up golf if your wife asked you to? And if you did would you feel resentful about it at some point?

depends on why she asked – if it’s one of the selfish reasons I have heard some wives give – then no – but if there is a good reason – then yes.

On the other hand....

My husband considered giving up golf last year, as he was playing poorly due to injured shoulder. He was saying to mutual friend that he wondered what “we” would do instead. I put him right on that score.

Seriously (alhough the above is true) my sister did ask her sports-mad husband to cut down on his w/e soccer, cricket, golf, on the basis that he never saw or did anything with his kids. He still moans about it. Was it a selfish reason or not?

Golf vs Marriage

If it was a choice between golf and marriage, I’d give up golf in a heart beat. Of course my wife would have to give up Dog Fighting………One of my all time favorite David Feherty quotes: “I just want to get good enough so I can quit.” The peculiuar thing about golf is there’s no “good enough”. Last night I had dream that I was having dinner with a naked woman, all I can remember is she had lasagna….and garlic bread…..and a goblet of chianti that was as big as a fish bowl…. Tiramisu for dessert….

How are we supposed to answer that, Wendy ? We don’t know the family’s situation. The guy might be working16 hour days and needs a little time to blow off steam and he can’t do it with the kids – OR – she could be mad because he doesn’t spend as much time with the kids as she does – OR – she could be exactly right…we can’t judge.

Really ? You can play a cricket rubber in just two days ? I had no idea !! :-)

I know it has to do with bowling (pitching to us Colonialists) – but what IS a “googly” ?

It's sneaky

The delivery of the ball looks as though it is going to spin away but actually then turns towards the batsman. You can see how the term “googly” can be used in other contexts.

I have actually kept a school report which states “Wendy bowls a mean googly and is a promising wicketkeeper”. My brother still wets himself laughing, especially as I attended an all-girls school.

I see nobody anaswered the second half of the question.

Would you resent it, if you did? The point I’m really driving at is why would you ask somebody you love to give up something they love? Tiger needs to keep his tail out of Vegas, and away from Jordon and Barkley, but there’s no reason he can’t play golf; it’s what he does.

tigerhead......you may be right, but sometimes the offer

of sacrifice is enough. He needs to do some big time making up. Check out my fan post.

Wouldn’t that be a point of maturity ? Shouldn’t the family come first ? IF golf, or whatever the hobby, is damaging the family, shouldn’t you be willing to do whatever needs to be done to build the family first ?

Tigerhead

I sort of answered in the affirmative, when I surprised my husband by planning to go on playing golf even though he was considering giving it up. Elin wouldn’t ask TW to give up golf – it’s who he is, not a hobby .

Never mind HIS shoulder!

Two years ago I injured my shoulder badly teeing off (should have done warm-up exercises) then turned into pinched nerve. I still walked the course with hubby, and then when I could, chipped and putted the course with him even when I couldn’t hit full shots. I wouldn’t have dreamt of asking him to give up golf because I couldn’t play a full round. His shoulder is fine now (I still have two “frozen” fingers on left hand in cold weather) but thanks for genuine concern CG.
