Reason #489 Why Bleacher Report is Stupid

Bleacher Report - in theory - sounds like a great idea.  Fans writing posts on any subject at any time!  Instant, thoughtful reactions are totally plausible.  Sometimes they even happen at Bleacher Report.  In the following case, it didn't.

Bleacher Report "analyst" Greg Riot tried his best to move on from the Tiger Woods thing to preview the PGA Tour's first event of 2010, the SBS Championship.  He outlined the top five contenders for the title.  In his list, he included Anthony Kim:

Kim finished 2nd to Ogilvy in this tournament in 2009 but could turn the tables on Geoff. Kim needs to step it up in 2010. The door has remained open for him to become the hottest thing in golf since Tiger, even though he had a less than spectacular 2009. However, he needs to win tournaments.

But there is more at stake for Kim than just winning. With Tiger on the sidelines, sponsors will be looking for the next great thing. That means a ton of marketing dollars could flow Kim’s way in 2010 if he can find a way to put a few trophies on his mantle. Shooting an 18 under again, or possibly better, in the SBS Championship would be a good way to start.

AK could turn the tables on Ogilvy were he ACTUALLY IN THE FIELD.  Anthony Kim won exactly zero tournaments in 2009.  How do you qualify for the SBS Championship?  BY WINNING A TOURNAMENT.

Effectively, Greg predicted that the 1st, 2nd, and 4th place finishers - as well as two guys that finished T6 - would do well again this year.  Way to go out a limb, Slugger.

As a result of reading this article, I am now ten times more likely to trust Radar Online's field analysis of the SBS Championship than Bleacher Report.

wow ! You beat Bil Jempty to the punch- that’s not easy to do ! :-)

I hope you left a note correcting him…not to mention the fact that Tiger hasn’t played this tournament in a lot of years.

Gimme a break

I never even visited BR before today, so it was easy for me to miss. BTW I can’t find the article now. Did Riot delete it after he learned of his embarassment?

Ryan you should have said Riot pulled a ‘Ron Sirak’. Sirak picked Juli Inkster to win the 2008 LPGA Championship when she wasn’t even in the field.

CG

I was being sarcastic. Like when I said if we’re both in agreement, Mars must be transiting Jupiter.

You and your facts.

So… typical. I want instant analysis, one that doesn’t require all of that time consuming fact-checking.
