Richie Ramsay Can Rest Easy After Winning on Euro Tour

Earlier in 2009, Richie Ramsay was rightfully facing a lot of scrutiny for trampling down a lie during a pick, clean, place round in the European Tour's Celtic Manor Open.  He did not call a penalty on himself for improving his lie despite a two hour conversation with rules official John Paramor.  (Remember him?)

Eventually, Ramsay finished 10th and the lax self-enforcement of the rules by Ramsay became a moot point.

Yesterday, though, Ramsay stormed back in the final round of the South African Open to overcome a five shot deficit and take the title on the first playoff hole against Shiv Kapur.

"There's no greater feeling than winning and I'm just a flood of emotions - I'm holding back the tears," Ramsay said.

Curiously enough, Sporting Life says that the exemption that the '06 US Amateur champion earns is only through the end of 2011 because the purse was under 1.5 million Euros.  That's something that the PGA Tour should consider!

With the win, Ramsay cut his world ranking in half from 240 to 120.

I just want to know one thing

Why did the conversation with the referee take two hours? It’s not like there’s not video to look at and whatnot.

Incidentally, I can see why there might be a debate. I would think he was simply looking for a spot that wasn’t saturated to place the ball and it’s not exactly clear if his lie was improved (i.e. did his foot leave an impression, and did he place the ball directly in front of it, or did he place it a couple of inches in front of it).

Still, I can’t imagine that there’s two hours worth of conversation to be had over that.
