Tiger Woods Apologizes for "Transgressions" and "Letting Family Down"

In a statement on Tiger Woods' website, Woods admits to "transgressions" and apologizes for them.

"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves," Woods said in a statement.  "I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect."

This comes on the heels of the release of audio from US Weekly magazine purported to be a voicemail sent by him to Jaimee Grubbs, who first claimed yesterday that she was engaged in a 31 month affair with Tiger.

Woods again repeated his request for privacy in dealing with these matters.

"I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

"I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions."

Woods closed his statement by saying, "For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."

court…I swear to God I was going to say the same thing….but I was going to add that privacy is NOT a virtue, chastity, honesty, and fidelity on the other hand are. A good start, yes, but you have a long way to go…I will pray for you.

Sad Day

This is a very sad day for Tiger the Man. Tiger the Golfer and the Tiger Brand will probably not suffer, but only time will tell. I really hope this statement was sincere and that he and Elin will work things out and keep their family together. Wow, how the mighty have fallen……Niblic, you are correct….they need our prayers.

The sad day was the one he pulled his pants down with another woman who was not his wife.

true – but now he has a chance to rebuild. Maybe he’ll come out a better man on the other end.

Moving on .

About freakin time. TW has never been my kind of guy,….but I do applaud his coming clean, and I hope he cleans up his life, on and off the course. A liitle humility may prove to be pricless in the future. Good luck to him…………………………………………………………..Z.

Ryan,
I’m not sure why you didn’t post the full apology, but here it is…

The following is a statement issued by Tiger Woods on his Web site:

I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don’t share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn’t have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it’s difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.

The problem is without seeing the full apology, you can’t see the arrogance and hubris of TW exposed. In paragraphs 2 and 3 he attempts to blame both the media and the public’s curiosity for his problems, when in fact he is totally resposible for this entire ordeal. Like I said earlier, he has a long way to go.

by niblic on Dec 2, 2009 11:17 AM EST reply actions

He does do that

how is that arrogance and hubris ? did he say anything that wasn’t correct ? letting the media know that he has no plans to just hand over the pound of flesh the media thinks they are owed seems like a good idea to me.

by courtgolf on Dec 2, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

courtgolf,
But this was a very close 2nd!!!! Did he say anything that wasn’t correct? Why, as a matter of fact, yes. 2nd paragraph…“The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious.” Do you really believe that, courtgolf?
And I already answered how that was arrogance and hubris(but I know you have this reading problem so I’ll be glad to post it again)….“In paragraphs 2 and 3 he attempts to blame both the media and the public’s curiosity for his problems, when in fact he is totally resposible for this entire ordeal.”
I already rebutted this portion of his apology…"But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one’s own family. “…in my first post of this thread…”but I was going to add that privacy is NOT a virtue, chastity, honesty, and fidelity on the other hand are." I would also like to add that Tiger agrees with me, that privacy must be protected in matter that are intimate and within one’s own family, but having an extramarital affair is by definition outside of one’s own family, so by TW’s own words, he does not deserve the privacy that he is whining for.

by niblic on Dec 2, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

True enough – but that statement is also a guy trying to protect his wife, who could be hauled off to jail in Florida if there is ANY kind of suspicion of physical abuse. (he’s also covering his own man-butt from people thinking he could be beaten up by a woman)

by courtgolf on Dec 3, 2009 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

No offense, Ryan, because I love this site and just commended you on your earlier article today about Tiger, but even TGC posted the entire apology. I have no business giving you advice about journalism, but that’s never stopped me in the past so why let it stop me now. But as a rule of thumb, isn’t it usually unwise to take some comments out of context and print them? Doesn’t that in many cases lead to things being misconstrued? Especially since in this case, the whole apology was only 5 short paragraphs?

by niblic on Dec 2, 2009 11:30 AM EST reply actions

I think the apology is within its own context. The part where he lashed out at the media is another. I just chose to kind of avoid that for now.

by Ryan Ballengee on Dec 2, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

No problem Ryan, it’s your column and your site. I was just trying to point out to you that by only printing what you did, it appears that you are trying to make Tiger look as good as possible. As I said even TGC printed the whole apology and I didn’t think any site could be any more sycophantic to TW than TGC. But that was before I read your latest column about Jaimee Grubbs…talk about trying to shift the blame for the affair from TW to this bimbo.

by niblic on Dec 2, 2009 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

True to values?

Tiger didn’t make a one off mistake – he engaged in a pattern of behaviour with what seems to be multiple women.

As of Nov 24, he was begging one of them to cover it up to continue to deceive his wife.

I think he has been true to his values, and the values are what need changing.

Great Post

Here is a guy who makes 70+ decisions every round of golf and is the best in the world at making those decisions. Then he is faced with the decision of…..My wife and kids and my reputation….or some whore………his choice?…….the pants came off. What a terrible waste.

by em66 on Dec 2, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

Good point!!

Please excuse the smart assness, but it’s more like 68.25 decisions per round… The road back is going to be a bumpy one…. I mean it’s not like he was married to Joan Rivers… Oh yes: A post over at TGC from g68 (I like to give credit where credit is due) “Cadillac is coming out with a Tiger Woods model next year, comes with an automatic transgression” or words to that effect…. Surprisingly nobody’s made a “stiff shaft” joke…. That seemed like a slam dunk…. And yes, it appears that Jamie wasn’t his first rodeo…. A pattern of behavior…good observation.

by pingforever on Dec 2, 2009 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

LOL, Ping

He didn’t talk to the FHP and I’m sure he still thought up until this morning when the blue dress voice mail was revealed that he could pull this cover up off. Boy, the consequences of this could be monumental. Tiger has always been to aloof with the media, so I doubt they will let this go…….you know what they say about payback……..ouch…

So you’re counting on a vindictive reaction by the “impartial” media ? I don’t doubt it one little bit, either.

Any suggestions for new Tiger Sponsors ??

How about, Trojan Condoms ? heh, he could wear one on the beak of his hat. Or how Viagra or Cialis. Maybe big JD will invite him over to share the spotlight at H@@TERS.

Any others ? anyone? Beuller ?

He could come out with new “easy” access “putter” pants with a quick release zipper. Or the new Cialis shafts that come in “stiff”, “xxx-stiff” and the forever popular “four hour stiff” that automatically calls your doctor. He will also be marketing the new indestructible fire hydrant…..for those late night “accidents”……..

More Stuff

I pulled this off of the Fox News.com site in a TW article…….."Grubbs shared some of the 300 racy text messages between her and Woods, including requests for “naughty” photos and promises to “wear you out.”

Woods was reportedly willing to pay for Grubbs’ travel expenses and, according to Radar Online, did the same for Uchitel. Radar reports that it was Tiger’s organization that booked and paid for Uchitel’s stay in Australia.

But the National Enquirer’s report on the Uchitel affair may not have been the first time the magazine had dirt on the billionaire golfer. According to the New York Post, the Enquirer covered up a story of a steamy extramarital affair two years ago in exchange for an exclusive cover story for sister magazine Men’s Fitness.

Former Fitness editor Neal Boulton told the Post that he left the magazine after the “seedy” deal went through in 2007.

“We were going to [do a quid pro quo with] America’s favorite sports star, just to get his name on the cover of a magazine,” Boulton said. “That was too much for me. That’s when I high-tailed it out of there.”

ok – showing my tech ignorance – how do you save 300 text messages ? My phone won’t save more than 100 and that’s a combination of received and sent.

And if she saved 300 texts – that tells you that she was planning on cashing in the first chance she got.

Love Fest

I just went to TW.com and over 12,000 comments have been posted…..I could only read a few of them for fear of “losing” my breakfast. If Tiger reads the comments and doesn’t read any other blogs, then it’s no wonder he thinks he is God. My goodness, he could have brutally murdered his family and the suck-ups would still drool over him……pathetic.

em66,
Same thing is happening on TV…the media heads are all but anoiting him a saint. And what about these so-called morals clauses in endoresement contracts? These companies(Nike, Gatorade,Gillette) are falling all over themselves to get a statement out first supporting TW. Thnik about it, what these companies are saying is lying, cheating, fornicating, taking advantage of these bimbos is OK by them.

of course it is – and as long as these businesses know that people are “forgiving” about these sorts of things and Tiger makes them one more dollar than they invested in him, they’ll keep him on. In a few months, these public problems will be gone…unless Elin decides to take the prenup money and run to divorce court, of course…but even Greg Norman was “forgiven” for dumping his wife and taking up with (yeesh) Chris Evert. Once he had that good week at the British Open, people remembered The Shark and not the wife dumper.
