Grandfather gets 'life' for fatal golf club attack
A life sentence in the UK means a minimum of 11 years 8 months in jail. Colin Gourlay may be still under 60 before he regains his freedom.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing knowing that other countries have a justice system as screwed up as ours – but a life sentence with possible parole in 11 years. How is that a life sentence ?
The guys got into a fight – the defendant went home and got a golf club (premeditation) and eventually injured the guy with the broken shaft and he died from the injury.
“Defence QC Andy Lamb, for Colin Gourlay, said the victim’s death was a matter of considerable regret to him.” (Ya think ?)
Solicitor advocate Richard Goddard, defending Dean Gourlay, said the first offender had expressed “disbelief” at what had happened. (No kidding)
Det Insp Kenny Gray, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We welcome the sentences that have been handed down today, which we hope will bring some comfort to Daniel’s family. (come on guys – in America, there would be a law suit filed to make millions – now THERE’S “comfort”)
“These sentences are a testament to the comprehensive report that was submitted to the Crown in respect of this case, and we would like to thank our partners in the Crown Office and procurator fiscal service for their assistance over the course of our investigation.” (anybody have ANY idea what this is supposed to mean ?)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
If I were in charge
A life sentence would mean “your sentence is over when they carry you out to the trash heap in a zip-up bag”.
