Waggle Roomie Vote #1: The Story of the Year
A few weeks ago, I announced our first ever awards called the Waggle Roomies. I solicited some categories from the readers and then decided to create some of my own. I'm going to roll out the categories throughout the month of December so it'll give us something to do other than top ten (or cute nine) lists of things about this year and the decade - especially since I'd be blatantly copying off of Jay Busbee at Devil Ball Golf.
So, the first category for the Waggle Roomies is: Story of the Year
This year was filled with a number of incredible stories. Many of them were true. Others were not, or turned out not to be true in the end. Some stories were uplifting and triumphant. A seemingly equal number were doomy, gloomy, and saddening. But, the Waggle Roomie will go to the story that is most compelling.
Without delay, here are the nominees for Story of the Year:
- YE Yang wins the PGA Championship at Hazeltine, ending Tiger Woods' streak of 14 major wins with a share of the 54 hole lead
- Brittany Lincicome winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship with the most incredible 5 wood you might ever see to the 72nd green
- The LPGA Tour producing a 2010 schedule featuring 23 events after having just 9 signed after the US Women's Open
- Tom Watson nearly winning the Open Championship, but ultimately losing it to Stewart Cink
- Tiger Woods winning six times on the PGA Tour, including the FedExCup
- Golf bloggers become the coolest people in the world
- Professional golfers and golf writers flock to Twitter and social media en masse, allowing for constant opinionating and bloviating
- Phil Mickelson's turbulent, but uplifting year, including four worldwide wins while his wife and mother battle breast cancer

no no no – the #1 Story – Ryan Ballengee is the love child of Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods. 8-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
SOME Golf Bloggers, Ryan.
There are golf bloggers, and then there is the Shane Bacon / Stephanie Wie / Ryan Ballangee / Jay Busbee level, with a few others.
The rest of us are little more than commentators with a few web skills.
Hey
I been credentialed twice to cover LPGA Tournaments. Unfortunately the LPGA did not come to Florida in 2009.
Ironically, Bill, I include you in the top tier. I forgot to mention you specifically.

Don’t discount yourself, OMP. You know you write some really good stuff over at your site. Hit count doesn’t dictate how good someone is at what they do.

What do you mean....
We can’t vote for the Tiger Woods hits the hydrant story. 16,000 articles have been written about it and at last count I didn’t count 60 on golf bloggers being the coolest people in the world.
Great!

obious omission
Maybe these are the seven warm fuzzy stories of the year…. Black Friday at Isleworth has to be THE most compelling story of 2009!
Say What?
How can it be a story???? You seem to think all the posts are useless because there are no facts, so this is not a story, just a waste of time speculating on what might have happened…..go figure.
a better word....
Perhaps it should have been called the Tiger Woods Black Friday EVENT…. We do know some things: 1. Tiger left his house very early in the morning. 2. He proceeded down his drive way and out onto the street at a rate of speed sufficient to hit a hydrant AND a tree and do what appears to be considerable damage to his Cadillac SUV. 3. We know a neighbor called 911 and have those words. You’re right, there’s been rampant speculation. In truth we have no right whatsoever to know anything about the circumstances prior to this EVENT, but given Tiger’s Woods preeminent position in golf, it certainly has caused a firestorm of journalistic activity not to mention blogging.
Tiger Woods sneaking in a few more holes
Clearly the media melee surrounding Tiger’s affairs is the most compelling story of the year — in golf and in all of sports.
