Derek Jeter Named SI Sportman of the Year; Mickelson Nominated

Capping off a history making season for the New York Yankees and their shortstop, Derek Jeter was named Sports Illustrated's 2009 Sportsman of the Year.  In a season in which he won his fifth World Series and became the historic franchise's leader in base hits, Jeter clearly had a tremendous year.

Phil Mickelson should not be lost in the shuffle, though.  Mickelson was nomainted by golf.com writer Alan Shipnuck in an essay from just about two weeks ago.  Lefty has had a tough year in his personal life.  Both his wife and his mother are both battling breast cancer.  Despite those challenges, Mickelson had a resurgent year on the course.

Mickelson won twice before making it known that his wife was battling breast cancer.  In an electric Sunday at Augusta, Mickelson had a chance to win his third Masters before falling short.  At his wife's behest, he nearly won the US Open at Bethpage before finishing as a runner-up for a record fifth time.

After his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in July, Mickelson clearly spent time to process the battle his family was facing on two fronts.  But, he returned to win the PGA Tour's Tour Championship at East Lake.  Then, he traveled to China to best a very strong field at the WGC HSBC Champions.

I know that there are a lot of jokes and snide remarks made about Mickelson.  I don't know Phil personally and I can't judge him as a person on that kind of level.  I can, though, see that Mickelson worked very hard to look after his family this year - even when his wife encouraged him out the door to the course.  The result was a fine season and a great example of how someone can take difficulty head on and turn it into somewhat of a positive.

The following golfers have won the honor, awarded since 1954: Arnold Palmer in 1960, Ken Venturi in '64, Lee Trevino in '71, Jack Nicklaus in '78, and Tiger Woods twice in '96 and 2000.  Patty Sheehan won the award in 1987 in the Athletes Who Care issue,

do you suppose any of Jeter’s votes had a secondary intent…to stick it to A-Rod ? :-)

Had Phil been able to pull off a win in the US Open, I think he wins going away.

Jeter is kind of a default choice in my mind. Yes, he’s a great player, and he’s on the World Series winning team, but among outstanding nominees, how does he stand out as clearly above and beyond?

It’s a popularity contest at its finest. Why NOT Jeter ? Why NOT Mickelson ? Why NOT a dozen other guys ? There’s nothing wrong with picking Jeter, especially after the season he just had. The Yankees will almost always be bigger than a golfer not named Tiger. Just the way things are.

Been watching ESPN lately? They lead off with Tiger Woods and not Fat Charlie’s being taken to the curb in South Bend.

Tiger had a better year (lol)

Weis’ team didn’t win much, but you have to admit that the offense has really taken off since he took over the reigns. It’s been the defense that has let them down.

Still, the Golden Domers are so loved by ABCDESPN that they allow Lou Holtz on every week to pick the Irish against any team they play.

Lou: “I’ll shake she Irish and gish she four points againsht she New Ingland Pashriosh!”

Mark May: “Lou, you are just wrong AGAIN. The Patriots are an NFL team and Notre Dame cannot even beat NAVY!”

Lou: “Sh’till, I hash a good feeling about she Irish in shish one, Mark.”

Phil Can Take Consolation: He Is "The Old Man Par Player of the Year"

Old Man Par’s Player of the Year: Phil Mickelson

In toto, Phil Mickelson started 2009 well, somehow not only managed to help his family when it need it most, and still nearly won his country’s championship. Then, he made a smart move and made himself a better player, one that NBC’s Johnny Miller says is the best in the world today, with all due respect to Tiger Woods. The whole way, he never lost himself and never forgot who he was and why he is adored by so many of his fans.

Phil, please feel to stop by OMP’s headquarters at beautiful Eagle Ridge whenever you are in the neighborhood. We’ll have an impromptu presentation of the Bobby Jones Trophy.

Tiger in 1996

That one was kind of premature right? It was before he ran away with the Masters?

That was the year he won his third consecutive US Am title, then turned pro and got a win and 6 other top 10 finishes in his first 10 pro starts. He lit up the sports world that year – which is pretty much what the award is about.

Yeah, he had a better 1996 than 1997, even with that Masters blowout.
