Cristie Kerr's Looking Kinda Hot in This Magazine

Winemaker, philanthropist, and - oh yeah - pro golfer Cristie Kerr is hitting the media junket of late.  She makes her latest appearance in a shoot for VIV Mag, which is a new digital publication that is the "digital-only luxury
magazine for women," according to the release

She appears in the mag's third annual (how is that possible?) Giving Back issue for her charity work to raise some serious dollars - many of her own, as well - for breast cancer research.

There's a bit of a disconnect though between Kerr's charity work, the magazine itself, and the article.

First, the release really is kind of contradictory.  It talks about Cristie's fashion faves in the piece - basically a whole lot of stuff that most of us will never afford.  (Except Lacoste.  I can afford that, but I don't like paying $80 for a polo shirt.)

The Editor in Chief of the mag, Anne M. Russell, is quoted later in the release kind of bashing the aforementioned goodies.

"Especially during the holidays, many people become so consumed with the frenzy of the season that they lose sight about what is really important: the spirit of generosity and giving."

But, we swear, it's about the giving.

Honestly, that's not on Kerr.  She's trying to highlight the charity work that she's doing.

The piece, though, has an interesting tidbit as it pertains to some comments that Kerr made to Steph Wei at the LPGA's event at Chelsea Pier a few weeks ago.

Kerr's vehement defense of Liberty National amid damning commentary - verbal and non-verbal - during The Barclays can be put into better context thanks to this piece.  Not only is she a member of the Cupp-Kite course, but it was also host to her Birdies for Breast Cancer tournament.  Kind of hard to bash the place that lets her run this charity event in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty for celebrities that really have little appreciation for golf architecture.

And, finally, Cristie's looking pretty good in the photo shoot in the black dress that she's wearing.  I can't help but notice that the pictures have probably been digitally touched up a bit, though Kerr generally cleans up nice for a night on the town.   Then again, I wouldn't mind a photo shoot where they could make me look 10 lbs. thinner, too.

Anyway, the article's a bit of a PR job, but is worth a quick read.

lol – love the “really – it’s about the giving” comment. I don’t care if someone puts out a women’s magazine that is 95% advertising of some very expensive products to lure the women and 5% fluff articles – but don’t try to blow smoke up our butts telling us that it’s all for charity.

You’re not thinking that she brought her own wardrobe in for this shoot, are you ?

Easy on the “damning commentary” about Liberty National. Saying that it has a few problems (not unusual for a new course) and that it isn’t a PGA Tour level course isn’t “damning”. Nobody in their right mind said they needed to blow the place up.

It was damning, but I agree that it wasn’t (usually) on the level of “bring back the toxic waste dump.”

I tend to go along the lines of “poorly written and highly exaggerated” instead of damning. The criticism from the players and former players in the media (aka "the guys who actually know) said that the course wasn’t playing for them the way it was designed (tee shots and landing areas), and those collection areas were a joke. Hardly damning since the collection areas are fixable – and hopefully the Tour will figure out that it isn’t a good course for them. (like Avanel – but it took them a few tries before they figure it out there, too)

Digitally touched up “a bit?” Christie in without doubt good material to work with, and the camera is friendly to her, but take a look at a typical portfolio of glamour/fashion before and afters:

They use silicone breast forms for that now.

This I know because I still have a pair of 38-C and 42-D’s in my studio gear. I used to leave one out on my desk, but Mrs. OMP put the kibosh on that. LOL.

Not MY fashion, LOL.

We used them when we had to, ummm, amp up a less than well endowed model. It’s a pretty standard thing.

Just a couple of comments ;o)

I realize you’re going for a certain style…I totally get the semi-snarky, blogo-journalistic / journo-bloggeristic thing and that’s fine, I’m not immune to writing that way myself from time to time.

However, as you rightfully acknowledge, Cristie Kerr does, in fact, work tirelessly for Breast Cancer Research and donates substantial sums to the cause. There’s nothing at all disingenuous about her dedication. And the fact that her story is being told in a luxury magazine is certainly not contradictory or disconnected in the sense that the readership of such a magazine would certainly be the right folks to target with such a message. The idea being, "you’re successful and well off which is great, so while you’re buying your beautiful Audemar Piguet watch or your awesome Lacoste polo remember to give something back. That’s the American way, isn’t it? And no one’s saying “it’s all for charity”.

As far as Liberty National, everyone who plays there – including myself – loves it…with the exception of few PGA Tour guys, arguably influenced by a desire to parrot Tiger Woods. ~ Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson all liked it and I’d guess they know something about golf course architecture. It’s a fact that not everyone likes the same type of course and Liberty was, after a brand new venue hosting it’s first PGA event.
The “damning commentary” came more from the blogger-journalistic spinners than from masses of disgruntled PGA Tour players.

Finally, regarding all the talk of digital retouching, you can’t photoshop a video so you may wish to judge appearances from this.

I think he was poking fun at the silver spoon writer of the article – not Kerr. The article reads like something “Thurston Howell the third” would say while trying to impress the rest of the castaways with his money.

You play at Liberty National ? Hmmm. Ok everybody…raise your hands if Patricia has called any of you to invite you out for a round !! :-P

Sorry P – this parrotting Tiger idea doesn’t hold water. Tiger made one comment and it was non-specific. The specifics were pointed out by Faldo and a few other players. Face it – this is NOT a PGA Tour level course. It’s not a condemnation of the course – it just needs some work (and what new course doesn’t have flaws ?) and it needs the LPGA – not the PGA Tour.

I watched the video – and it looks like there was a LOT of makeup…and sorry…yes…those pictures are photoshopped. They might not be trying to make a 5’7" woman look like she’s 6’ tall – but there was some work done. (take a look at the arms) Personally, I doubt there are any pictures published in magazines that aren’t photoshopped to some extent. And I don’t much care – I think Kerr is very attractive in her golf clothes and next to no makeup. I don’t need these hoiti-toiti photo shoots to think she’s pretty.

Oh – although you can’t photoshop a video – photoshop is for stills – you CAN use other software to do the same kind of things to video, but it’s not something you would do to a video like this. William Shatner, in one of the Star Trek flicks, complained that his butt looked too big in some of the scenes, so they digitally removed a few inches of Kirk booty. :-)

Pretty much every PGA Tour player – with the exceptions you noted – despised LN. It wasn’t spin. Players legit hated the place. I’m not going to back down off of that. Since I haven’t had a chance to play the place, I can only critique what I have seen in video and photos. The place has some serious design flaws. Some are related to playability, some are related to the routing, some to variety, etc. What makes a course good or bad is so much more than views, manicured grass, etc. And a good number of guys on the PGA Tour have little or no interest in architecture. They just play the course in front of them.

With Phil being a member at LN, his endorsement is a bit tarnished.

I certainly applaud what Cristie’s doing. Anyone who can use their influence for good is alright by me, especially to the tune of those kinds of dollars.

And I’m 100% certain that there was some photograph retouching. And there’s nothing wrong with that – standard procedure.

jO

I didn’t mean to say there wasn’t some retouching done on the photos, photos that go into high end publications…or almost any publication these days… are always retouched whether the subject is the most beautiful woman on the planet or a crowded cityscape or a zebra in the African Savanna… it’s part of good design. But I do maintain the video wasn’t ..oh and thanks for the William Shatner visual Court >:o0 Of course there’s make-up … have you ever seen a newscaster, politician or actor go in front of a camera w/out it? Never happens.

And regarding Liberty National. I’m not backing down either LOL.

And you shouldn’t back down. Liberty National is a very pretty golf course with some nice vistas (if you’re a fan of looking at New York City). It’s just not a PGA Tour level course. It was chosen prematurely, and if the players get their way, it will never be a PGA Tour site again…but their opinions don’t mean it isn’t a nice course. None of my favorite courses that I play on any kind of regular basis are PGA Tour level courses either.

Big difference in slathered on makeup and those pictures.

I wish I could find just the Young Frankenstein scene with Madeline Kahn and Gene WIlder at the train station, but it starts at 1:40 on this link…and it has the introduction of “eye-gore” and the “walk this way” line…AND…the greatest line in movie history…“what knockers !” plus a Frau Bleucher.

I wouldn’t want you to back down :) that’s the fun of golf architecture and course design – arguing!
