Shocker! Study Finds Golfers Like to Gamble...A Lot
On the heels of some terrific scientific research in the UK that suggestions men like women who show off a little skin, and research from the Johns Hopkins Medical Center that confirms humans cannot substitute nitrogen for oxygen in order to live, we get some great new findhings from the NCAA about college golfers.
A study released recently by the NCAA found that male college golfers are far more likely to wager than other athletes.
Twenty percent of Division I men’s golfers were "frequent’’ gamblers, according to the survey, done anonymously in 2008 with more than 19,000 student-athletes in 11 sports. "Frequent gambling’’ is defined as once or more per month. The golfers' rate was up from 14 percent in a similar survey in 2004. Eight percent of men’s golfers were defined as "heavy’’ gamblers, meaning once or more per week in ’08.
If you've ever played golf, then you've probably gambled. Even if you're like seven years old, you probably gambled with your mom or dad for a Coke if you could break 50. Seriously, everything about golf encourages gambling.
And this isn't relegated to rich golfers. How many $1 Nassaus have you played? Yeah, that's right, degenerate. What's worse is that you're teaching kids to gamble. Everyone knows that skills like implied odds, doubling down, and card counting are not applicable to everyday life.
The article doesn't really say what kind of gambling that collegiate golfers do, but I would bet (har, har) that it is mostly done on the course. Hopefully no one took Yale in the Harvard-Yale game straight up. Cause that coach has a lot of explaining to do going with the fake punt on 4th & 22 from their own 26 yard line up 10-7 with 2:30 left in the game. Talk about a bad beat!
The moral of the story: gambling is bad, therefore golf is bad ...don't teach your kids to play golf, they'll only gamble... gamble, gamble, gamble, die.
You can learn more from the experts at the Golf Coaches Association of America conference from 12/7 to 12/9 in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada! (Seriously?!)

The Department of the Obvious definitely got their money with this study.

I don’t think this is what the study is talking about. That article is horribly short on facts and points. The NCAA report isn’t talking about golfers playing a $1 nassau during a friendly round, and this article doesn’t bother with little details like the actual findings that D-III student athletes gamble more than D-II student athletes who gamble more than D-I student athletes.
Just as funny is that the article from Jack Copleland of the NCAA News gives only slightly more information than the article you linked from Golfweek.
The study is about student athletes betting on other sports, how often they do it and how much they bet.
RB – this could be right up your alley (lol)
Thankfully, they didn’t go with the sterotypical thought that golf, being such an “elitist sport for the rich” means that golfers have more money to gamble. :-)
