Source: Senior Players Championship to TPC Potomac in '10

I had this story in waiting at the time of the Senior Players Championship in Baltimore, but couldn't get a second source to confirm it.  Well, now my second source is the Champions Tour 2010 schedule released to players.

The post below was originally written on September 30, 2009.

TIMONIUM, MD -- According to a source, the Champions Tour's fifth major - the Senior Players Championship - will be moving to TPC Potomac in 2010.  The East Course at Baltimore Country Club/Five Farms has served as host of the tournament since 2007.

The current contract with BCC and title sponsor Constellation Energy Group is supposed to continue through the 2010 tournament.  The future of Constellation as title sponsor is in serious jeopardy, though.

In September 2008, Constellation agreed to a tenative buyout from Warren Buffett's Mid-American Energy Holdings. Ultimately, that deal was never completed.  Instead, Constellation agreed in December 2008 to sell half of its nuclear energy assets to Electricite de France.  That deal is expected to be ruled upon by Maryland's Public Service Commission in mid-October, according to the Associated Press.

The source said that the PGA Tour - parent of the Champions Tour - will likely agree to a buyout of the title sponsorship for 2010.

In addition to a new title sponsor, the Senior Players Championship host course will change for 2010.  The tournament is expected to move to TPC Potomac at Five Farms (formerly TPC Avenel) which underwent a $25 million overhaul that was completed toward the end of 2008.

The Washington Post reported in May 2008 that this move would be likely, though at the end of the contract in 2010.  That report was before the precipitous fall in major stock exchanges that drastically reduced Constellation's book value, making it a takeover target.

The move may be temporary, though.  The source indicated that the tournament could return to Baltimore County Club as soon as 2012.

The PGA Tour was contacted for this report, but denied the report from the source.

Hmm – I’m detecting a bit of homerism here. That’s ok RB – Maryland is a good state – ok to be proud of getting the tournament. :-)
