Cram It, Other ACC Schools! University of Maryland Golf Course to Host Nationwide Tour Event

My alma mater, the University of Maryland, will be hosting the Nationwide Tour's Melwood Prince George's County Open starting next year. It joins Ohio State University's Scarlet Course and University of Georgia's course as the only collegiate tracks to host pro events.
Last month, Punchbowl Golf took a look at the redesign work done at the golf course by Bill Love - trying to add onto the work of George Cobb's original design.
While I know that Fred Funk used to be the Maryland golf team's head coach, I didn't know that Nationwide Tour President Bill Calfee is a Maryland alum.
Go Terps!

Have you played it since the re-design? I’ve never played this course, but a lot of really good local amateurs are “members” there. I may have to check it out!

I played it a ton when I was in school, but not since the redesign. I like the course cause it offers a challenge from the back tees without being ridiculous.

If you want to do some “research” for the Nationwide event, I’m game!

Weekends are best for me, but I can cut out of work early one day during the week, too.
I’m away this weekend and have tournaments at the Road on the 18th & 31st.
17th or 24th work for you?

I played PB Dye Golf Club this past Monday, which is the only PB Dye design in the area that I can think of. That’s about an hour away and was built in ’99.
Does he have another, newer course in the area? Not that I’ll be in any hurry to play it if it’s like his course in Ijamsville, MD! ;-)

No – that’s the one I was thinking about.

I like PB Dye – I shot 82 the time I played there a couple of years ago.
I think the 24th would work good

a couple of YEARS ? I thought it was a new course. Is it just starting to mature and get some recognition outside the area it’s in ?

Ryan – the 24th sounds good. I’ll drop you an email or FB message and we’ll set it up.
PB Dye GC seems to be getting more recognition and was recently named the #11 course in MD by Golf Digest. The greens were the best I’ve ever seen at a public facility and the scenery is excellent, but I think #11 is a little generous.

This could be a trend – putting Nationwide Tour events on college campi around the country. Last Spring, UGA signed on to take over the tour stop formerly held at Jennings Mill.
Then again, seeing what kind of football seasons the Terps and Dawgs are having, top colleges might not want the Nationwide Tour contracts. :-)
Speaking of Terapins, RB, have you found the Terapin brew up there ? (see ? another UGA – UM tie !)

Congrats.
I would have thought Karsten Creek or Colbert Hills would have held a pro event by now.

Lonnie Poole GC is your course’s daddy. Played both.
The scuttlebutt we heard at the SAS was a couple of pros were saying it was the best course around the Triangle, which means it is better than the TPC which has the Nationwide and Prestonwood that has the Seniors.
