Freddy Has to Pair Up Phil and Tiger

There are two great reasons why Fred Couples MUST pair Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson this week in the Presidents Cup. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

Between the years 1963 to 1971, Jack and Arnie paired up to win seven major two-man team titles. They won the Canada Cup in '63, '64 and '66. They won the PGA National Championship (played under various names) in '66, '70 and '71 and the World Cup in 1967. Jack and Arnie were only on the same Ryder Cup team on two occasions, 1971 and 1973, but in both cases, they were paired together. Their record was two wins and a loss.

The Presidents Cup is not regarded as a true competition. It is a exhibition, a showcase if you will, of golf. Unlike the Ryder Cup, there is very little real sentiment and zero history. It was designed to make money. The players saw through the ruse right away and some, including Tiger and Phil, demanded to be paid. They never once asked for a penny for competing in the Ryder Cup. This week, team up Phil and Tiger every chance you get. Americans deserve to see their best two golfers together. There wasn't any question in the 1960's who the two best golfers on the planet were and there is no doubt these days.

Read down the list and read any other combinations out loud to yourself. For example, Tiger and (insert ANY name)..!! Now, say this out loud. "Ladies and Gentlemen. For the United States team, Tiger Woods from Windemere, Florida and Phil Mickelson from Rancho Santa Fe, California". What sounds better to you?

good grief...

…you and your rubber necking, train wreck mentality. :-)

It may not be The Masters or even The Players or even Bay Hill…but you ask Tiger if it’s a competition or not. If the US is up 8-0 or even 7-1 after day one – go ahead and put Tiger and Phil together, but I thought Tiger was going to punch Phil in the nose after that Ryder Cup disaster.

Tiger went to and excelled at Stanford.

I don’t know Ryan’s readership demographics, but I would lay wager that Stanford-level readers are a minority.

psst – Michelle Wie “attends” Stanford – and the Rules of Golf are too heavy a reading assignment for her. :-)

Wait a few years when they’ve mellowed a bit. Their record together isn’t all that great together and the tension between the two, real or perceived, isn’t great for team cohesion.

On this being just an exhibition, Gary Player would probably disagree with you.

I thought...

… that Stricker and Woods were the two best golfers in the world, as of this season?

Adam, Phil is back @ #2 in the OWGR's and the golf

world coroneted him when he won at East Lake.

Ron, the tension between Arnie and Jack in the 1960’s was at its peak when they played together and won everything. Plus, I want them both to be at the very top of their games. It won’t happen, but I, for one, would love to see it…

Great point, Ron, I had

completely forgotten that. Do you know if Jack have McCormack from the beginning?

It was pretty early from what I’ve seen. Of course IMG represented Gary Player too.

Exploded the game.
