Presidents Cup Day 1 Matches Announced & Predictions
Hot off of the presses are the matchups for day one of the Presidents Cup. There are six matches on day one - so there is no hiding a weak player. All of these matches are alternate shot/foursomes.
Match 1: Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson vs. Mike Weir and Tim Clark: Mickelson is playing well of late. Everyone else, not so much. This may well be one of the more entertaining matches of the day only because AK is very aggressive in match play and Clark can putt from everywhere.
Match 2: Hunter Mahan and Sean O'Hair vs. Adam Scott and Ernie Els: Have to like the Americans here, but this match will be the story of the player that can putt best since all of these guys are notorious for being kind of stinky on the greens.
Match 3: Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink vs. Vijay Singh and Robert Allenby: I could consider this one a toss-up, but I think I like the Internationals here because of Robert Allenby. He's a very strong player in the Pres Cup. Glover and Cink are both playing excellent golf, though.
Match 4: Kenny Perry and Zach Johnson vs. Angel Cabrera and Camilo Villegas: I am truly baffled as to who to pick. The team with the guy who is mourning the death of his mom and melted down at East Lake, or the team with the guy who has fallen off of the face of the earth since February but still made the team somehow.
Match 5: Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker vs. Geoff Ogilvy and Ryo Ishikawa: My favorite match, exclusively because I think the teams make a lot of sense. Stricker and Woods are contrasts in style, but seem to be a hypothetical match. Ogilvy is a(n over)thinking player who could really help steer Ishikawa, who just picked up his fourth win this year in Japan.
Match 6: Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard vs. Retief Goosen and Y.E. Yang: Yang has to be dead tired from the life-changing event of winning the PGA Championship. That doesn't mean that he can't or won't contribute, but Goosen isn't much to help the cause. And I always like these scrappy American teams with the "aw shucks" guys like Furyk and Leonard.
I should note that Golf.com's David Dusek nailed all six US pairings based upon his knowledge of the balls that the players use. Pretty impressive.

I must be missing
something. Everyone is saying ‘on paper’ how much stronger the Americans look. I can’t see it.
With the exception of a few young rookies, the International team is super strong. Even the rookies could light up our ass.
So, Ryan, what Dusek is saying is if I were on the team, he would look for another player with a pink “Flying Lady” for the the foursomes? That is offensive to those of us that use pink Flying Ladies

Really?
Haven’t had time to study your comments on each pairing, but immediately I saw them on the SC/LG vs VJS/RA pairing – I felt incredulous. Stewart (always acknowledged as my favourite player) has 8-4-1 record against Robert’s 6-11-2. AND SC vs RA?

I mean that Allenby is a strong Pres Cup player because he is such a good ballstriker that he can apply serious pressure in the match play format.

Really?
They’re ALL good ballstrikers, Ryan. Love team competitions and can’t wait for it all to begin.
I find your posts v. interesting and switch to you immediately after PGA Tour website – yea – before Travelgolf (feel slightly disloyal) and Twitter – follower not poster. Umm – just in case previous posts have not seemed appreciative. Brits don’t do fulsome, well not this one anyway..

ful·some (fʊl’səm) adj. Offensively flattering or insincere.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

ah – thanks D – I was looking for some British term we don’t use over here. :-)
Gee Wendy – we would never do anything like that here…especially to such a lovely, intelligent, talented…. (lol)

No problem, Wendy. It’s just one man’s opinion :) I welcome disagreement, but that’s the real reason I said what I did about Allenby. He is renowned on Tour as one of the most pure ballstrikers (yes, better than most on these two teams). He’s just a terrible putter.

YIKES !!!!!
Hunter Mahan has an 8 footer for par to halve the first hole…and knocks it by 12 feet. This is after snap hooking the tee shot. A shot that would have been in the woods if it didn’t ricochet off of a guy in the gallery. TAKE THOSE RIDICULOUS SUNGLASSES OFF !! They are really dorky looking.
Then Anthony Kim misses a 4 footer to lose the second hole ?
Not a great start.
