Has There Ever Been A Hole You Just Own? Or Get Pwn3d By?
During my round of golf on Friday up here in Pennsylvania, my future cousin-in-law told me about how much he loved the last hole at the course we played. It's a 300 yard par four from the white tees. The tee shot is to a slightly elevated fairway, so you cannot see where the ball lands. The green is pretty small, but that's only because the back half is used as the practice green.
The hole doesn't really pose much of a threat, so I can understand why he likes it. Then, he told me that at one point, he birdied the hole seven consecutive times. Seven! I don't think I make seven birdies in seven rounds, much less seven straight times at the same hole. (Then again, I don't get to play much.)
But, I birdied 18 - nearly drove the green, chipped up to a foot, and made the three. Good stuff.
The story made me wonder if there was a hole that I ever owned quite like my CIL did this one. Perhaps it was at the course I played in high school - One Eyed Golfer and Matt Spence's home club, Rolling Road CC. I love the eighth hole there. It's about 400 yards, with a drive over a valley to the fairway. The green is pretty small, but enticing enough. It's the only hole where I've ever made eagle on a par four, and I did it with a discolored Rock Flite that I found earlier in the round.
I always seem to make par there.
Then again, the second hole at Fairway Hills always seems to get me. It's an awkward, sharp dogleg right par five with a creek separating the parts of the dogleg. If I hit driver and try to cut off the dogleg, I could slice it into an apartment complex playground. If I hit it left, I can pull it into the woods. So, I hit my 3 hybrid. And I hate that. I hate that hole.
So, tell me, do you have a hole that you just love playing - or loathe?

Holy Shnikes ! Making birdie at the same hole seven times in a row !! I’ll bet you’d be hard pressed to find even a tour pro who has ever done something like that. I don’t think I have ever birded the same hole more than three times in a lifetime – much less seven times in a row.
Unfortunately, the only hole that comes to mind is on the negative side, and at one of my alltime favorite courses. #18 at Wolf Creek here in Atlanta – a dogleg left par 5 with water to carry from the tee and on the right, and a creek to carry on the second shot – the tee shot isn’t that big of a deal, and the creek on the second shot is rarely an issue. The problem is a very large, magnetic, oak tree on the right, across the creek. It doesn’t matter if I’m hitting 7 iron over the creek, or 3 wood trying to get to the green – all shots end up under that tree.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
A short par 3 at a course we play a lot. Plays as long as 120yds roughly and as short as 85 depending on tees and pin location.
I am convinced however there is nothing as evil in golf as a DOMED GREEN! If you are short, long, left, right on this postage stamp you have pitch/chip up onto the green that sits 6-8 feet above your ball. Any chip short will roll back to your feet. Any chip over rolls off the other side to leave you an equally hard shot. Lather rinse repeat.
I hate that freaking hole and run from it anytime I get a 4 with a sense of relief.
