Is A Fall Series Invitational Event Coming? Bad Idea Jeans.

The Hearld in Monterey County, CA, has a story originally reported by Bill Huffman at AZGolf.org that the just-completed Frys.com Open will not only move to a new venue in 2010, but also will become an invitational tournament.

The report is based part on grumblings, but also on a 2008 (the paper reported 2007) PGA Tour Policy Board press release foreshadowing this move:

"Following two additional years (2008 and 2009) at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course, The Fry's Electronics Open will move in 2010 to the Fry's Electronics-owned course called The Institute, located near San Jose, Calif. Upon its move to The Institute, the event will be renamed The Institute Championship and will become an invitational event with a 120 player field."

The PGA Tour said the report is just speculation at this point.  Back when this release came out, Fry's Electronics had its name on two Fall Series events - then consolidated into what is the Frys.com Open.

I'm also inclined to agree because you can't really have an invitational tournament if the list of invitees is 31-150 on the Tour money list.  May as well call it the Mediocrity Invitational, or the Rank and File Classic.  That's just a bad idea.

Ok – here’s the real question…who really CARES what it is called ?

There were 132 in the field this year – if they cut it down to 120, is anybody going to notice ? They can call it whatever they want, but when most of the first 30 invitations come back with “thanks but no thanks”, they’ll just move down the list and fill out the field and have basically the same crew they had this year.

“Invitational” may sound more impressive – but it’s still a Fall Season event.

On the other hand, maybe they are getting indications that they are next on the list for a regular season spot ?

is that how it works?

Sponsors fork over unreasonable sums of money for second-class talent in third-class (post post-season) events. And if they do that long enough they’ll eventually get bumped up to a second-class event (opposite the Open Championship for example) during the regular season? I wonder how shareholders feel about that?

umm – no IF/WHEN a regular season sponsor drops a tournament week, a Fall Series event gets that week. Nothing about being opposite of the British or a WGC event – though it is possible that the open week is an opposite event to the British or a WGC.

“unreasonable sums of money” ? if it were “unreasonable”, the sponsors wouldn’t pay it unless there was some return on investment each year or promised down the road that makes it worthwhile….which…by definition…makes it reasonable. (I know we’re getting closer by the day to that Euro-Socialist way of life you’re “hope”-ing for – but we are still theoretically a free market society. Nobody put a gun to these company’s heads to force them to pay for the tournaments)

I write something about golf and the business of golf which prompts you to go all political on me. Come to think of it, you go political on almost everyone these days.

At the end of President Obama’s eight years in office the US will NOT be a socialist country. Capitalism will still power the economic engine. Hopefully you won’t have given yourself a stroke from getting all worked up about the president.

Must-Yawn-TV…that’s what the fall series is for the most part. Invitational, Open, whatever, it is all the same.

The golf was good – it was just from a bunch of guys we all don’t know as well.

and here I thought you were a GOLF fan...

What’s your point, RB ? These guys are now and will always be better than we will ever be. No – they aren’t Tiger and Phil – but that was an exciting tournament.

This fad of badmouthing people who aren’t THE top of the pyramid is really tiresome. If people would watch the golf for what it was, they WOULD get to know these guys and appreciate what they can do.

Well there you have it – talk to my little brother Ryan, willya, pop ? He thinks that only Tiger and Phil play good golf, but he got all excited over Lerner and Chamblee making out over Rickie Fowler. (lol)

I was very happy with the golf this weekend. I wasn’t badmouthing the guys that aren’t Tiger, Phil at all. Actually, was defending them on OMP’s branding of them as “Must Yawn TV”

None of the institutes I attended had

golf courses. Or, were they institutions?

When there was a waiting line for tournament sponsors, the PGA might have laughed at Frys wanting to use their own course and dictate where they play. Supply and demand, my friends.

I have to admit the past six tournaments have generated some good golf and some great finishes, big names or no names. I think 120 should be the max field in EVERY tournament.

CG, have you ever won a confrontation with dianemarie?

...from the land of pleasant living, Baltimore.

Why a max of 120 ? The cut line is the same – just 12-24 fewer guys to cut each week.

Funny, I didn’t know I had ever lost one of our friendly jousts. (whipping around to make sure D’s not behind me) :-D
