Phil Mickelson Thinks the PGA Tour Season is Over
Lefty's in Singapore for a $3 million appearance fee sponsor obligation the Barclays Singapore Open and he's over there because I think his fax machine at home only got him the FedExCup part of the schedule.
"Our season in the US has been shortened and that allows many of the top players to play internationally and allows me to come here and compete," he said.
"I am hoping this will help grow the game in addition to the Olympics."
Really? It's been shortened? Wow. Phil Mickelson doesn't even recognize the Fall Series as actual golf tournaments. They're just $5 million exhibitions. Kind of like the event he is playing in this week on the Asian Tour - the place to hyperinflate your world ranking.

Mickelson is about half-right…the season effectively ended for the top players with the end of the FedEx Cup. Right now, we’re in the “Card Cup” portion of the year. Other than Rickie Fowler, where’s the real excitement?
Right now, the Tour is like watching the last two teams in an NFL division playing in the last week to see who finishes 3rd and who gets a better draft pick.

I mean, I get that, but don’t say that!

I’m going to add “grow the game” to my list of phrases that should be on the burn pile next to things like all copies of “You Light Up My Life” and “Wind Beneath My Wings”. Also on the list of recent phrases is “this is a teachable moment.” (no it’s not – you can’t teach a moment anything)
Mickelnuts isn’t going to China to “grow the game” – he’s going to China to grow the bank account.
Hard to blame him for saying what he said about the season the way he said it. The PGA Tour calls it the regular season, and the playoffs. It only makes sense that the season is over after the playoffs.

There simply isn’t any benefit for the top players to play this week.

I mean, cash is a benefit, but I don’t expect a whole lot from the ole Viking Classic this weekend.

RB – PLEASE tell me you knocked on wood when you said that. You would’ve said the same thing about the Frys.com last weekend and we ended up with a 3 hour makeout session between Lerner and Chamblee over Rickie Fowler.
Fowler, according to the field roster on PGATour.com, will be taking three spots in the field this week. You’d think he’d give Lovemark one of them. :-)

they don't call it "silly season" for nothing
I can’t believe there are sponsors willing to put up that kind of money and not get premier talent.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

Just goes to show...
…how much value there is in hosting any PGA Tour event.
The exposure must be worth it. Though, title sponsors tend to turn over a lot at some events, so maybe it’s not worth as much as they thought it would be.

The Viking Classic has the 3rd best field this week...
The European Tour is pulling double duty this week with the Volvo World Match Play and the Singapore Open (which is co-sponsored by the Asian Tour) and both have some pretty serious talent.
Nine of the top 25 players in the world are playing in the 16-player match play field and six of the top 25 are in Singapore. The PGA Tour has zero players in the top 25 in this week’s field.
Shouldn’t they call these four week’s the 2010 Nationwide Tour preview?

Haha, that’s probably true. If it weren’t for Fowler and Lovemark, I would’ve watched the NWide Tour Championship instead.
