Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What Grooves Do and How the USGA Measures Them

During my trip to the USGA testing facility in Far Hills, NJ, USGA Senior Technical Director Dick Rugge explains the impact that grooves have on golf clubs. He also explains the two ways that the USGA measures golf club grooves for compliance with the rules of golf.

I'll have more from the trip to the USGA in future posts!

He didn’t, but this was a group of just general golfers. A lot of them probably had about zero interest in the topic. Dick told me I should come up and get the full tour. We had about 20 minutes. It’s normally more like 90 to 120.

It sounds like you could spend several days going through the whole place getting the full tour.

I could probably get the full tour in two days. Just a LOT there. It’s a pretty decent sized place.

Great video.

I’ve been curious on the details of what is happening with the grooves. All I really get from watching any of the broadcasts is that it is going to be more difficult to spin the ball, and I honestly feel like I’ve heard some broadcasters say that they are going to V-grooves, which seems counter to what you heard there.
