Now For Some Encouraging LPGA Tour News
After the firing of eight staffers last week, we here at Waggle Room posed the question to wonder if the releases were due to how things have been for the Tour in the last 18 months or how they will continue to be. Stephanie Wei may have some of the answers. She attended the LPGA Tour's corporate outing last night in NYC - not too far from where she lives, or where I played golf yesterday.
Bottom line: encouraging news for the Tour. Here are the highlights.
The Tour expects some 25+ events for next season with five new events. Three had already been announced. The new J Golf event in Cali, the return of the Bell Micro after a hiatus, and the Acapulco event were already known. Evans indicated that an event in the "midwest" and "another is 'a train ride or short car ride from NYC'" will be forthcoming. Just me extrapolating a bit, but perhaps one is the site for the new old ADT Championship.
Marty Evans announced that a title sponsor has been secured for the LPGA Championship for next year. Solid. Not sure of venue yet, though.
But, Evans was close to the vest on the search for the new commissioner. Kind of interesting that was just a few hours removed from Pete Bevacqua's "no comment" during our conversation on his candidacy or willingness to take said position. It may be clear now that he holds all of the cards in this situation.

I wonder why the J-Golf event is being moved to a city in Columbia, best known for its drug cartel?

I still think the LPGA is missing a great opportunity – they should just go ahead and make Rear Admiral Evans the new commish. It’s pretty obvious that the sponsors like her style and are willing to work with her.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
