Navistar LPGA Classic: You Must Be Under 20 To Win, Over 21 To Drink

Alexis Thompson, the amateur standout and fourteen year old, leads the LPGA Tour's Navistar LPGA Classic after day one. She fired a seven-under par 65 to hold the lead over 19 year old Michelle Wie by a shot.
Thompson is the youngest player to ever qualify for the US Women's Open, doing so at age 12. She has been in the field three years in a row.
Thompson will also be competing as part of Paula Creamer's team of four amateurs representing the United States at the Spirit Cup in November in Texas.
This is not the first time that the LPGA's Deep South swing prodcued an amateur leader. As an amateur, Stacy Lewis led the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship after 18 holes. Inclement weather prevented the tournament from progressing further and officials declared Lewis the winner.
Though the victory goes down as unofficial (basically, like it never happened), here's the eerie part: Lewis shot a 65 in her only round, too!

Luckily, they are in one of the most bizarre places I have ever seen. I played this course last year – and aside from a few hotels, gas stations, restaurants, and a tiny strip mall, there didn’t seem to be anything to call it a city. The locals swore up and down that there was a high school and a business district. We looked – honest ! Unless she brought a 6 pack with her, there might not be anything to drink without driving to Montgomery. :-)

it doesn't take the announcers long...
Ochoa hitting her tee shot on a par three – announcer-ette describes the green “It can be a difficult green, it’s broken down into four quadrants.” Wow – really ? What would happen if there were only 3 quadrants…or even 5 ?
Same hole – 143 yard par 3 – Gustafson needs to hit “150 yards to carry the ridge in the middle of the green.”

where's that mute button ?
Charlie Reimer calls every missed putt a misread…announcer-ette calls every missed putt a mishit.
Kim Welch putting for birdie at 11 – announcer-ette “looked like a good putt, but she hit it through the break” followed by Reimer “probably a misread”.
SO – it was a good putt that was hit too hard and misread…makes sense to me.

By Kim Welch standards
It was a good putt.
Among the 78 players who finished last week, Welch had at least 5 more putts than anybody, 132.
Actually her putts so far in this event look very good, particularly the severe left to right birdie putt on #9 which she drained.
