Camilo Villegas Ups "Eagles for St. Jude" Commitment

I do some occasional feel good pieces over here at Waggle Room.  This is one.

Camilo Villegas decided to increase his financial commitment to the Eagles for St. Jude program, in partnership with Stanford Financial.  He will now donate $5000 for every eagle he cards on the PGA Tour this season.  That pledge matches that of Vijay Singh.

Last year, Villegas pledged $3000 per eagle, but wound up donating $30,000 in total.

Stanford donates $1000 for every eagle on the PGA and LPGA Tours.

All of the money benefits the St. Jude Children's Hospital.

it's cool what a couple of wins can do...

…Camilo really bumped up his tax bracket with those two wins – I’m glad he’s putting some of it to very good use like this. (now if he can get his putter to behave so he can actually make those eagle putts !) :-)

I was kind of surprised

When I looked last year at the eagle leaders. I figured guys would be into double digits to have the lead, but that’s not true.

not at all...

…as much as many players see par 5’s as automatic birdies – it’s still incredibly hard to hit a 2 or 3 iron or hybrid, or a 3 or 5 wood within “easy” eagle putt range. I wish they would separate par 4 eagles from par 5 eagles. I’d be interested in knowing how many eagles came as chips or putts on a par 5 as opposed to holing out a shot from the fairway on a par 4. Holes in one are easy to find in the stats.

I was thinking

that somewhere around a dozen for the year would be a winner. I guess that’s awfully high.

08' stats

there were 28 guys in double figures – and Chad Campbell lead the league with 16. (Peter Tomasulo had 19 on the Nationwide Tour)

Villegas had 7 for the year. Vijay had 6.

106 total eagles on Tour for the year by 194 guys. (at least that’s what it looks like – they have 3 other names with nothing in the eagle column)

16

was higher than my expectation – 33% higher!

2008 Eagles

There were actually 1118 eagles on the PGA TOUR last year and 469 on the LPGA Tour. They keep it updated on the Eagles for St. Jude website.

well that makes more sense

I wondered how they got 106 eagles out of 187 guys on the PGA Tour site. :-) that’s a much better number
