Fantasy Golf Kicks Off This Week

The PGA Tour and fantasy golf season kicks off Thursday for the Mercedes-Benz Championship.  Thanks to everyone that signed up or will sign up (you have until Wednesday sometime) for Waggle Room Fantasy Golf over at Yahoo! Fantasy Sports.  Make sure that you have your team selected by Wednesday.

As an early primer, the strategy is easy:

  • Pick the players that you think are likely to play best this week
  • For players that you expect to use the max of 10 starts this season (tough to do), make sure you diet out your use of them early.  i.e., Save them for major events.

Looking forward to starting up this week!

UPDATE: We're working on some prizes for fantasy golf this year.  This isn't confirmed, but even the threat of prizes should be enough to get you to play with us!

Already done

My picks that is. No Stuart Appleby this year. He would have been a easy one.

Dirty Harry said it best...

…“a man’s got to know his limitations.” And fantasy sports are one of mine. Players were calling me up begging me NOT to jinx them by picking them that week. :-D

i've never played fantasy (any sport)

I’ve got no business participating since I don’t know anything about players who haven’t spent time in the top at some point in their careers, but I’ll give it a one-time shot.

you never know !

sometimes beginners luck is all you need ! there was a lady at the radio station who picked the football winners each week based on the uniform color — she won the season pot.

Come oooooooooon....

As plugged in to golf as you are, it would be a breeze. I’m not typically a fantasy player because sometimes it gets too complicated and time consuming, but this is one of the more simple games I’ve seen.

You have a chance for Waggle Room glory.

And there might be prizes...

I’m working on that right now.

Haha

If you want that, I can make that happen. I was thinking more like a club or two, some golf balls, umbrellas.

If I win

Can you wrangle a birthday or christmas card signed by Carolyn Bivens? :-)

Haha

If I could pull that off, I think I would save that for myself :)

Yahoo Golf Rules...

Just so I have this right…I pick 4 active guys (from the pools) and then 4 backup guys – I can switch up from my bench and active guys on Thurs/Friday/Saturday, but if I use my bench guys for even one round that counts against one of their 10 appearances for the year. Can I switch my bench, or once I’ve picked my 8 guys for the week that’s who I’ve got? Can I use a guy on Thursday, bench him Friday and put in back in on Saturday and it still only counts as one appearance? This might actually require me taking notes and keeping track of my guys! Thanks for any help…

Good questions

Ok. There’s 3 categories of player – A, B, C. For A and C, you pick two players and for B, you pick four. You start half from each group. By picking a player, it counts as using them one of your 10 times, even if they ride the bench all week (as far as I know). You can switch players off and on the bench before the start of each round, but you can’t switch any of the 8 players that you selected before the tournament with those that you didn’t pick once the event begins. Those are your 8 guys and have to make do.

I might need a math degree..

I finally found the Rules section on the Yahoo Page – I couldn’t find the link at first – if you do not play a benched guy for the entire weekend they do not have to count that appearance.

For the purposes of this game, if you have a golfer active for any one round of a tournament, it counts as him playing in that tournament. Likewise, a golfer who is on your team, but stays in a reserve position for all four rounds, does not get credit for a tournament played.

But still – with 37 weeks and the potential of playing up to 8 guys a week, they are going to rack up appearances quickly – this is going to require some strategy. I’m definitely going to have to take notes.
But it should be fun!

Thanks for the clarification

That rule has always confused me!

It can be tough to make a balance, but may I suggest that you play the best players in the best events. I know it seems like a simple strategy, but it really does work.

Good advice

I’ve already gone in and changed my line-up 2 times – week 1 and I’m already overthinking!!

by red tees on Jan 7, 2009 8:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

swapping players

There are only three ‘C-List’ players participating this week. I’ve selected one for this week, but I’d rather not be stuck with him or either of the other two for the entire season. Can we change players during the year?

Yes

You can change every week – so long as you don’t play them for 1 round during an event 10 times.

perfect!

Thanks, Ryan. 8-)

bench players don't count unlss you play them

An appearance is only an appearance when a player goes off the bench.
