OneAsia Tour Becomes Six Event Reality
A couple of years ago, the chatter started around the concept of OneAsia Tour that would unite the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Japan Pro Golf Tour, the Asian Tour, and smaller tours in China, South Korea, and India. We had PGA Tour of Australasia CEO Ben Sellenger on The 19th Hole (all the way from Australia!) to talk about the idea and how he was hoping it would come to life in 2009, and even more so in 2010.
The Asian Tour then stepped in and said it would not back the OneAsia idea, preferring the dual path of growing on its own and in allegiance with the expanding European Tour.
Well, the PGA of Australia announced today that it would embark on this idea without the Asian Tour and it would take the form of a six event "super series" in 2009.
The new series will start with the China Open from April 16-19 and finish with the Australian PGA Championship from Dec. 10-13.
Other events include the Beijing Open from May 7-10, the Korea Open (dates to be determined), the China Classic from Oct. 15-18 and the Australian Open on Dec. 3-6.
No tournament in Japan has been scheduled for 2009 in the new series.
There is still no official name for the series, or many other details. But, at least we have a start.

I got the wrong degree...
…should’ve studied marketing. The "One"Asia Tour that doesn’t unite much of anything. And a “Super series” of 6 events…umm…a super series usually comes as an addition to something, or a special set of tournaments for the best of the best. Then again, my honest streak probably would have gotten me thrown out of class too often to graduate. :-)

I think
That this may fall on its face if the Asian Tour cannot get behind it. I know the Japan Tour is on board, but they’d do fine without anybody.

who's going to play ?
A few of the top players on a minor tour might play a few of the tournaments – but not all 6 – and it’s going to depend on how much appearance money is involved. They’re not going to leave their major tour series to barnstorm for a few weeks.

It'll basically help pull in
a couple more B names to the Aussie Triple Crown. That’s a good thing, but not a great thing.
