The golf gods have a great sense of humor
For three weeks, we had to listen to "experts" tell us that The Tour Championship was going to be a waste of time - Vijay had wrapped up the Fed Ex Cup and the $10 million top prize. Vijay admitted that he didn't know what to think with everybody congratulating him before he had officially won. (he still had to play 72 holes at East Lake)
"Nothing to play for" and no Tiger - there was not point to The Tour Championship - why even bother playing ? That was the attitude of the media - and the half empty media tent at East Lake proved that they only cared about the big money.
Then the golf gods reminded us that this game isn't about big checks and media hype - it's about great golfers playing great golf on great a great course. Anthony Kim fires a 64 on Thursday - low round of the week - which wasn't supposed to happen with these new greens. By Sunday, this "boring" tournament was a three man race - Mickelson, Garcia, and Kim. Villegas was 5 shots out of the lead - he was just there to make sure that all the sun dresses weren't jammed into one gallery. His double bogey at 6 and bogey at 7 looked like coffin nails. Then birdies on 5 of the next 6 holes and he was right there. This guy is more than bulging biceps - he has a lot of heart.
So, in the end, the golf gods reminded everybody that it's the GAME that is most important - not the flashy checks, playoffs and confusing point systems. Fed Ex's $10 million top prize went to a guy who finished T22, 18 shots out of the playoff - and 25,000 people on the grounds of East Lake were treated to one of the best weekends of golf of whole year.
