Still Not Sure About Golf Channel's Ratings
Sports Business Journal was reporting on the summer performance of sports networks - particularly ESPN - but also was talking about the performance of other nets. Golf Channel came up:
Golf Channel, in the second year of its 15-year deal as the PGA Tour’s exclusive cable partner, was down 12 percent in prime time but up 1 percent for total-day viewership.
But, we have this from an oldie but goodie at the GNN Blog:
At a time when broadcast networks are seeing less than 3 percent growth in PGA Tour viewership, the Golf Channel delivered an impressive 19 percent increase over its 2007 PGA Tour coverage with households and a 21 percent increase with its key demo, men 25 to 54.
This post was in August. Could it be possible that the events without Tiger have been so horrid that they've thrown down the averages THIS much?
Could the Golf Channel help me out here?

apples and oranges ?
every time I see stories about ratings, I think of the phrase “lies, damn lies, and statistics”. These people seem to be able to come up with numbers to prove or disprove most anything.

I love the PGA Tour coverage (especially the evening replays), but I miss the jam-packed instruction that used to be prevalent. Now it seems like it’s all reality and/or game shows (Big Break, Highway 18, School of Golf, etc.). Give me back the constant stream of Golf Channel Academy, Playing Lessons with the Pros and so on, and throw in old reruns of Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf for good measure. I will admit that I loved The Daly Planet and Plugged In, though.
Maybe all the cool stuff comes on when I’m at work. My happiness with the Golf Channel is a mixed bag these days.
