PGA at Oakland Hills CC this week

I'm going to put my two cents in here and say that this could be a VERY exciting PGA Championship.  Since Tiger decided he prefers TWO good legs - go figure - there has been a resurgence of some bigger names on Tour.  Names that for much of the last few years have been hiding in the shadows licking their wounds after being beaten around the head and shoulders by Tiger for so long.

Sure, Vijay's putter was balky inside 4 feet...sure, Phil started missing fairways and greens on the back nine again, and even muffed a couple of bunker shots (something we rarely see from him - maybe Pelz will have time to design a special wedge for him before Thursday), but they were there on Sunday.  Els was coming along, Stuart Appleby and Stewart Cink, Geoff Ogilvy, Harrington couldn't get it going, but he forgot his luggage and had a few things on his mind at the start of the week.  Sergio is...well...Sergio.

Then you have Kenny Perry - a couple of off weeks at the John Deere and the WGC-Bridgestone - but he' still having a great year.

Anthony Kim is still riding high with his two wins this year.

How about Robert Karlsson ?  He has top 10's in all the majors this year, and he definitely has the length and patience to be there on Sunday.

Oakland Hills has undergone some changes the last few years thanks to Rees Jones. Bunkers have been moved so they will be 300-310 yards off the tee and will put a few thoughts into a few heads.  If they want the shorter irons into some tough greens, they will have to challenge the bunkers - otherwise they will be hitting longer clubs into very tough and fast greens.

Choose wisely, grasshopper.  I'm going with Geoff Ogilvy to win, with Kim and Singh as alternates - with the prediction of a playoff.

Phil ?  He'll be wandering around in the trees wondering what new shot he can conjur up since he's already hit the miracle super high wedge at Colonial, and the miracle 3-wood from the trees at Firestone on Saturday.  Oh - and Oakland Hills as water in play coming down the stretch - and we know how much Phil likes the water on Sunday.

Those are my predictions - how about yours ?

no VJ Day this week

I haven’t really settled on a winner yet, but I’m going to rule out Vijay. Those Oakland Hills greens are the toughest in major championship golf. At least, that’s what “they” say … and “they” are never wrong, right? right? Every 4 footer Veej has this week is going to have lots of break. I think his nerves will be shot after Day 2

what happened

Phil used to be so much fun to watch. Now he’s just… well, he’s just a little weird. I still think he’s just making the game more interesting for himself while the rest of us do double takes. Having said that, he’s not my pick for the PGA. I spend most of my time following the LPGA, so I’m just going to throw some names out and see if anything sticks.

I’m picking Steve Stricker to win. He putts as well as anyone and he’s played well at US Opens, which means he can hit a narrow fairway. I’m taking Sergio (mostly because no one else will) and Kenny Perry as my CYAs.

144 guys, no dominant player. Have fun trying to pick someone.

WHAT ?

no dominant player ?? who’s the last winner of a national championship ? You’re obviously forgetting about Chez Reavie !! :-)

no I didn't

He was fourth on my list. 8-)

actually

With no dominant player, it’s reasonable that a rookie could win.

by dianemarie on Aug 7, 2008 10:18 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

maybe conceivable...

...not sure about reasonable…but that Chez Reavie can light it up ! :-)

Oakland Hills isn’t really a course that first timers will thrive on. There are a lot of Ryder Cuppers in the field from ‘04.

But hey – some of your picks are off to a good start ! You had Stricker and Sergio – both are under par early. I had Karlsson.

Mickelnuts ? bogey-bogey-birdie starting at 10. Will there be another computer glitch in his bag ?

Which Singh?

You only said “Singh” you didn’t specify whether you’d be choosing Vijay or Jeev Milkha. So which is it?

by dianemarie on Aug 7, 2008 11:38 AM EDT   0 recs

hmmm

...which one is ahead ?? ;-) I was talking about Vijay – I always seem to forget about Jeev Milkha, though he has had some really good results in his career.

Singh

When you posted your picks I thought about asking which one then decided not to because Jeev Milkha doesn’t play in the US that much — I figured he’d skip this one. When last I looked he was doing okay.

leader in the clubhouse at -2 !

Friday

The list of players who aren’t going to make the cut is impressive.

Vijay Singh
Mike Weir
Darren Clarke
Trevor Immelman

How many times today (Friday)...

...will we have to hear the phrase “hole-in-one location”? I’ve heard it twice in the past ten minutes.

The most beautiful phrase in the English language: "Touchdown, Alabama!"

lol

really ? on TNT ?

Yep.

And just now, they played back in from the commercial with some sort of idiot song (only lyrics were “It’s summertime in northern Michigan”) that featured the piano riff from “Werewolves of London”.

Zevon (RIP) rolls in his grave.

Zevon

Warren Zevon is dead ??? How did I miss that ?

Somehow, I doubt putting his riff in that song could be any worse than using it in a Tom Cruise movie with him in that ridiculous looking pompador haircut. (“The Color of Money) LOL

Sergio crushes my hopes

He hit a 5-wood off the tee at 16 which put him at risk of going into the hazard, which he did. He missed a 4-foot putt at 17. Had either of those not happened it would have been a playoff. If neither had happened, Sergio would have won. This make me wonder, after the ‘07 Open Championship, does Harrington own Garcia?
