No parades for Wie in Canada ???
Wow - it's Wednesday already, and I haven't heard the first peep about the greatest golfer in history teeing it up at the CN Canadian Women's Open this week.
No parades - no video mantage - no 24 hour coverage from XXX Golf Channel - nothing !
Is the magic gone already ? If she doesn't win or finish top 4 to get a card for next year, will we start reading "loser" articles left and right ? (hey - she and Sergio could start dating...as long as he doesn't mind dating someone taller than him) :-)
What has happened to the media hype machine around Michelle Wie ? Swallowed by global warming ? In therapy during Tiger's absence ?
My prediction ? If she makes the cut, but finds herself way out of contention for a top 4 finish - there will be a mysterious relapse of the wrist "injuries", or the heat will get to her, or a new Spice Girls and Insync CD will be released that she just HAS to have -- and she'll withdraw.

doubtful
I think she’s turned a corner. We’ll see.

turned a corner ?
you mean in the last week since the mess out at the Reno-Tahoe ? she’s hardly had time for a good shopping spree, much less a change in character. :-D

Did we ever determine...
...if Wie could finish Top 10 and get into the next non-invitational field? Cause the media guide says so, but isn’t 100% clear.

not a member
Since Wie isn’t an LPGA member, I don’t believe she would benefit from that Top 10 clause.

straight from the LPGA office
Just spoke with the LPGA rules office, and here’s how the LPGA handles the situation.
The TOP TWO non-exempt players who finish in the top 10 are given entry in the next eligible full field event.
The players DO have to be LPGA members – so Wie doesn’t count.
Also – the LPGA office is estimating that Wie needs at TOP TWO finish this week to secure a card for next year – not the top 4 we have been saying.
(we also mentioned the Q-school option – neither of us could keep a straight face on that one)

Thanks!
The media guide explanation of that rule just isn’t clear. That’s a lot easier to understand.

How much of a disaster was Reno-Tahoe?
Michelle Wie: 73 80-153
David Duval: 78 76-154
About half the men in the field miss the cut on a given week, but they generally get off without notice—even someone as naturally talented as former-number-one Duval, even one who called Michelle out in public before the tournament.
If you ask me, she’s still a college kid with plenty of time and all the talent in the world. Maybe she’ll figure it out and maybe she won’t but it’s her life. I don’t even want to think about what a flake I was at 18.

good points
courtgolf has a thing about Michelle Wie. Any news, or even the lack of as in this case, will always draw a negative post from him. I figure she has the talent and high profile (without regard to how that came about) that entices sponsors to want her in their tournaments. I don’t agree with her decisions all the time, but I admit to being one of CG’s sheep who just love watching her when her when she’s on her game. As you said, maybe she’ll figure it out. If I had the opportunity I’d bet she does.

SWING and a miss...
...D – the post was not about Wie – it was about the media
gruntled – she’s not a “college kid” – Stanford is a smoke screen – she has been there two quarters – not enough to finish her freshman year, but she is constantly being called a sophomore. David Duval improved from round 1 to round 2. Oh yes – Duval was formerly the #1 player in the world and like Ian Baker-Finch, his game mysteriously disappeared.
do not kid yourself – I know Wie has a lot of physical ability – and I also know that having everything handed to her the last 5 years has not helped her one single bit. she has wasted 5 years playing glamore games instead of improving her golf game. At this rate, she will never live up to even a little bit of her potential.

the media?
Well, I suppose so. You fooled me with the title and concluding paragraph. It seems you also fooled TC, Ryan, hound dog and gruntled.

were you thinking...
…that Wie was going to throw a parade for herself ? and the last paragraph was my prediction.

parade?
You mean like with marching bands and floats and baton twirlers and… oh… wait… no… that was the best metaphor you could come up with, wasn’t it?
If you’re suggesting the press isn’t fawning over her like they did when she was fifteen, you’re right. Come to think of it, I don’t recall reading one of those articles since she turn pro.

sigh..
…you see, D – that’s called exaggeration for humor – we don’t want Ontario to have to clean up all that ticker tape and elephant poo from their streets, now do we ? :-D (oh – and that’s not a metaphor)
ummm – you didn’t notice all the media falling all over themselves at the Reno-Tahoe a couple of weeks back ? Didn’t notice all the press talking about her “skipping” the WBO that same week ? (even though everyone who said that was wrong)
Personally, I’m thrilled that the CWO people aren’t falling all over themselves for her. I thought it was funny that her name is the last one on the list of players – below Monday qualifiers and amateurs. I hope she does well – but at some point, I would like to see her do something the right way and not the marketing way.

If Michelle Wie even knew you
and responded to you, I think it would be 4 lines from an old Billy Joel song
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time
I don’t care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone

no doubt
unfortunately – she gets the same advice from just about everybody around her – including her coach – and she chooses to ignore it. doesn’t say much for her decision making ability.
“I mean..you can – like – speak your – y’know mind
But – like – not on my time
I mean – I don’t – like – care any more – y’know – what you say anymore, I mean – this is my life
Go ahead with – like – you’re own life – y’know – leave me – like y’know – alone”
