Dueling Quotes

Jay Williamson blurted out his truth upon hearing that Michelle Wie would be playing the Reno-Tahoe Open:

“When I saw it I actually thought it was a joke, quite honestly.”

Then added something else that is probably true:

“I know she is going to sell a lot more tickets than I will, but I would say it’s surprising. I don’t think it’s a real popular decision out here.”

Today, Michelle Wie blurted out her truth upon hearing that Jay Wiliamson's initial reaction was "it was a joke":

"I don’t know who he is."

Then added something else that is probably true:

"A good score will resolve everything."

An in-between, David Duval blurted out the truth:

“Whether I agree if she should be playing – I think she would be better off on the Futures Tour competing against women – is neither here nor there.

“Michael Stearns [Tournament director] thinks she can bring people in, and that’s his job.

“If some guy needs a spot in the field, chances are he’s not going to sell any tickets. She might add 2,000.”

Maybe because Duval is still an exempt member of the PGA Tour? :)

Oooo

I think he got you on that one Con :-) Besides – people still know David Duval.

I’m wondering if Wie was being a snotty, catty teenage girl with her comment about Jay Williamson, or if she really is that ignorant – the guy WAS just in a playoff…on the PGA TOUR…last week. Last time I checked, you have to make a cut to have a chance to get into a playoff.

heh

Still, I think Wie has a better chance of getting a PGA card than Duval does for 2009, his Open Championship performance notwithstanding.

I’d bet on cluelessness for Wie. Heck, I didn’t know he was in a playoff last week.

really ?

come on Con – you can’t believe that Wie has a better chance of having a PGA Tour card for ‘09 than Duval ? A former #1 player in the world – played well at the British – still working on getting his game back, and shows flashes of being able to compete again.

the rest of this year?

Have you ever been tempted-even just a teeny bit-to pick him in our Yahoo fantasy league?

Obviously, both have a snowball’s chance in Maui…and Duval’s got a $46K lead on Wie, thanks to his 3 for 13 success rate…but Wie’s schedule is pretty clear, what with the lack of LPGA and FT events on her plate…so she still has time to pass him.

Actually, I’d love to see him come back, but I’ve been waiting so long….

tempted ?

I’m not sure what you mean. Of course I wouldn’t pick Duval in a fantasy league. Is there a fantasy league for picking players to make the cut ?

What are we comparing ? $46K lead ? 3 for 13 ?

Obviously, Wie has more potential room for a future in golf as things stand. Duval’s game keeps sneaking into the Baker-Finch realm, and Wie’s just 18 and has the LPGA there when she wakes up from this PGA Tour fantasy. I’m like you – I would love to see Duval get his game back and be competitive again, but between the back problems and whatever you call the “disappearing game” problem, I’m not holding my breath anymore. If he has a good tournament – it’s gravy.

Head to head – Duval beats Wie 99 times out of 100.

courage

I can’t find the Thursday/Friday pairings, but wouldn’t it be cool if the tournament paired Wie and Duval? Talk about great television!!

lol

might be – but it won’t happen. there are rules about pairings. wins and rankings play a part in who plays with whom.

come on

you mean they can’t find an excuse to pair the (Sagarin) 666th (I’m not kidding) ranked male with the 216th ranked female?

Rank Name Rating
666 David Duval 74.04
—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—
216 Michelle Wie 74.36

numbers

if it wouldn’t cause world wide riots – it would be interesting to see a ranking system that could accurately place men AND women together. As good as she is, Wie wouldn’t be above Duval – neither would Ochoa or Sorenstam, I’m afraid.

I’m not a big Sagarin fan – he likes mixing in opinions – but what does the rating number equate to ?

dunno

As far as I know, Sagarin is the only rating system that uses the same criteria to rank both men and women, and it’s still apples to oranges. The only rating system I have any familiarity with, other than an occasional glance, is Hound Dog’s, but he has neither golfer ranked so that would have been useless.

I’d bet Sagarin has a key somewhere that explains all his criteria, but I’m not interested enough to go digging for it.

oh well

I guess the rankings and ratings fall into the old Tootsie Pop “Mr Owl” commercial – “the world may never know” (STILL one of my favorite commercials of all time)
