Sunday Finishes
... and Open Thread ...
R&A
Padraig Harrington eagled the next-to-last hole of the tournament to seize the Claret Jug as the British Open championship. Or rather, to avoid relinquishing his hold as the defending champion.
PGA Tour
Richard S. Johnson had a first-round 63 at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, and a final-round 64. And that propelled him to the 1-stroke win over Ken Duke.
Champions Tour
R.W. Eaks set a new tournament record at the 3M Championship with a 54-hole total of 193, six strokes ahead of second-place finishers Gary Hallberg and Bernhard Langer.
Nationwide Tour
Colt Knost's final-round 62 included back-to-back eagles, and he pulled away from fellow Walker Cupper Webb Simpson to win the Price Cutter Charity Championship. Knost finished at 26-under 262, with Simpson alone in second at 266.
LPGA Tour
Yani Tseng bogied the 72nd hole to fall into a tie with Ji Young Oh at the State Farm Classic, the Oh won the playoff on the first extra hole.
Ladies European Tour
Martina Eberl pulled away for a 5-stroke win at the Ladies Italian Open, her second win on the LET. Carmen Alonso was second and Maria Hjorth among a trio in third.
Futures Tour
"Big Break: Kaanapali" champion Kim Welch posted her first win on the Futures Tour at the Alliance Bank Golf Classic, besting Jin Young Pak on the fourth playoff hole.

JLPGA
Akiko Fukushima got her 2nd win of the season, the week after the only players ahead of her on the JLPGA’s career money list got hers. Fukushima extended her lead on the season money list over Ji-Hee Lee, who came in 3rd, behind 2nd-round leader Ayako Uehara.

THE most useless stat of the day...
...just watching ESPN’s crawler at the bottom of the screen – how’s this for an obvious stat ? Harrington is the first player to win back to back British Opens since…(drum roll please)....Tiger Woods did it in 2005-2006.
Think Paddy’s tipped a pint yet ? :-)

Brilliant.
Harrington is the first back-to-back winner of the Open since the last back-to-back winner, Tiger, who won the Open back-to-back in the two years immediately preceding Tiger having done so.
You ever get the feeling that the crawls on the cable news channels and ESPN are written by chimps?

Fun weekend to win
Colt Knost is one win away from a promotion to the PGA Tour a year out of college and winning the US Am and the US Public Links - then turning down his invitations to The Masters and US Opens to turn pro. I think this guy is going to make it.
Can we start a rumor about the 18th at the State Farm LPGA ? Wie bogies 18 on Saturday, then is sent packing. (anybody buying the “I always sign my card first” story ? who signs their card BEFORE they check the numbers ?) Then on Sunday, Tseng bogies 18 and loses the tournament in a playoff. Hmmm – is the 18th haunted ? (ok – probably not)
And the long and lovely Kim Welch cranks out a win on the Futures Tour ? Mmmmm – I like that ! She’ll have some Big Break mojo to take to the Navistar ! Might have to drive down the road a piece and have a look with the big girls, then again when they come to Atlanta at the end of the Futures Tour season.
