Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Open Thread - Final Round, British Open

What's happening today?

Update: Norman pars the fourth after three straight bogeys. Paddy now in the lead by one (Harrington opened with four straight pars).

Update: Norman's hanging in there pretty good. So good that he's tied for the lead -- +6 through 8 holes, with Harrington.

Padraig Harrington +6 (8)
Greg Norman +6 (8)
Simon Wakefield +7 (8)
Ian Poulter +8 (11)
(a) Chris Wood +8 (11)
Anthony Kim +8 (10)
Henrik Stenson +9 (10)
Ben Curtis +9 (9)
Ross Fisher +9 (9)

Update: Lead now +7, Norman and Paddy, through 11. Ernie Els is in the clubhouse at +12. Jim Furyk is in a bunker at No. 18, if he gets up and down he'll take the clubhouse lead at +10.

Update: Furyk is in at +10. Pretty amazing that he has a shot, eh? ABC just pointed out that the last four groups - the final one is through 11 -  have produced only two birdies among them.

Update: A birdie! By Ian Poulter on No. 16 to get into a share of the lead at +7. With the par-5 17th next, Poulter is looking pretty good. He should at least knock the clubhouse lead down.

Update: Norman has a very hangdog demeanor now. Dammit, Chrissie, get in there! "Greg, I lost to Martina 143 straight times! But I never gave up!"

Update: Poulter in at +7 with a great par-saver at No. 18. Paddy leads at +6 through 14.

Update: Paddy is the winner. There's one hole left, but with an eagle at No. 17 Harrington has a 4-shot lead.

Very few players under par today...

...among those who got out early. Some scoring opportunities, though: David Howell shot -3, largely by virtue of an eagle at 17.

It’ll be interesting to see how these guys handle today. Apparently conditions are damn near identical to yesterday, so they all have a round of this under their belts.

The line on Duval:

73-69-83-71. One abysmal round, and three rounds of very high caliber golf. Currently T-46.

I can’t tell you how much I’d like to see Duval put the pieces back together. He damn near did so this week, and I hate that yesterday went down the way it did.

Duval

That 71—in these conditions, on the heels of an 83 … very encouraging.

It really is.

But he’s shown signs of his erstwhile skill over the past few years, only to stumble again. And it stings, because I really think he’s one of the good guys.

get this

Furyk’s +10 knocked out a bunch at +12 who had been leaders in the clubhouse—including Mr. 1st Round 80, Ernie Els. How cool would it have been for him to have come back and won this in a playoff?

Poulter, and his hair, birdie 16 for a share.

He’s liable to post 7.

And there it is.

Poulter in the clubhouse at +7. Great par putt at the last.

How about AK

Anthony Kim, No. 1 in GIR … dead last in putts. If he was just in the middle in putting stats, he’d probably have a 6-shot lead.

Yep.

He may indeed be the proverbial “next great American golfer”.

Pinkie Poulter

What a putt at 18. If you win The Open wearing pink pants, do you get an exemption into the Women’s British ? :-)

Harrington two up, two to play...

...and no burns this year between he and the Claret Jug.

incredible

as good or better than Corey Pavin at the US Open. I don’t think they were playing in 35 mph winds at Shinnecock.

they just had to do it

leave it to Azinger and Tirico to crawl up Tiger Woods hind end. by bringing Woods into the equation with one hole left, saying that he “WOULD” have been in contention and right there following a game plan.

the nerve of these to idiots – saying that Woods’ not being here doesn’t diminish what Harringtion is doing – that’s EXACTLY what they did. they just kissed Tiger Woods butt and did everything but suggest that Harrington just mail the trophy to Tiger’s house.

Norman back at Augusta

"right out of the middle of the bat"

...Harrington talking about how well he was hitting nearly every shot in the final round.

I could listen to Harrington talk all day.
