How do you forget to sign your scorecard? And how do the people in the scoring area fail to check that you did before you leave it?

I'm sorry...

...but this is sad and funny on ALL kinds of levels.

She finally has a week where things fall into place, and she finds something else dumb to do to flush it all. (can I see those high school transcripts ? “honor student” ???) No, she’s not the first to forget to sign a scorecard and she won’t be the last – but these days you almost have to do it on purpose because there are so many checks and double checks in the scorers tents.

These stories always seem to work in the Stanford angle. Do they not remember that she left ?

The BIGGEST mystery, to me at least, is how the heck did she get on the first tee ? If this happened on Friday – you’d think there would have been a phone call to MW Friday night so she’s not embarrassed at the course on Saturday with the media around. How did someone who doesn’t know the rules end up working in the scorers tent ? But not only didn’t the phone happen, the mistake wasn’t brought up until after she started the third round ? It makes no sense.

Get ready for the standard “why is it so important to have them sign those cards anyway ?” articles.

It’s a real shame. And to top it off – now she pretty much has to finish top 2 at the Canadian Open to get her card without going to Q-school – and I doubt she’s going to take that route.

I'm sure you've seen the details by now...

...but just in case not, it sounds to me like there was no rules official in the scorer’s tent when Wie’s pairing came into it, Wie forgot to sign the card and no one caught it until afterward, a volunteer ran after her and got her signature outside the tent, and no one realized this was irrelevant (leaving the tent w/o signing broke the rule) until after Wie had started her round Saturday. So rather than disrupt Wie and her playing partners, the tournament officials then had to wait until after their rounds were complete before givin Wie a chance to answer their questions.

not a chance

there HAS to be a tournament official in the scoring tent – because a volunteer was sent chasing after her does not mean the official was not in the tent.

however – if the tent was empty – Wie would not be any less responsible for what happened. the tournament people in the tent are not there to make sure that cards get signed, and the players aren’t technically required to even add up their scores. that’s the official’s job.

the only mistake made was handing Wie the pencil after she left the area. if that hadn’t happened, they tournament officials would not have allowed Wie to start on Saturday.
