Open Thread: British Open, Round 3
Phil Mickelson is 5-over through 12 holes as this is posted, so anyone who thought Phil could get back into it (I'm looking at you, BogeyMcDuff) will have to give up on that dream.
Use this thread to discuss the action from today's play while it is in progress.
Update: The leaders are off and the wind is howling. Rocco Mediate hit a 200-yard drive into the wind, had 221 left to the green on a par-4, one-putted for par. Gonna be a long day for the lads.
A couple of players have broached the possibility, and the R&A has looked at the possibility, of suspending play due to the 30 mph "breeze" - the concern is balls moving on greens. But so far, they play on.
Update: The guys who got into the clubhouse at 7-over - Ben Curtis, Ross Fisher and Anthony Kim - are looking like they'll be in pretty good spots at the end of today. Curtis was 38th at the start ot the day, shot 70, and - as I write this - sits 11th. Kim and Fisher were tied for 27th, shot 71s, and now are tied with Curtis in 11th. Simon Wakefield is through 17 with an even-par round going. If he pars the last, he'll get into the clubhouse at 5-over.
Update: Worst scores of the day so far are a par of 83s. Plus two 82s, one of them by Justin Rose. But it's looking like David Duval, alas, may top them. He's 12-over through 12.
Update: Watching Greg Norman's attempt to mark his ball - he'd reach down with his coin, pull it back because the ball oscillated, make another try, pull it back, try again, pull it back - makes me think it would entirely reasonable to suspend play. The pickle the R&A is in is if they suspend play, when do they resume? The weather report is for howling winds through tomorrow. A suspension might lead to the completion of the tournament on Monday, possibly even Tuesday.

Watson in the booth, too
Old Tom is doing a pretty good job – he has so much insight into the winds these guys are playing in.
Mickelson is pretty much out of the running, but if these conditions keep up, he could end up with a pretty high finish if he plays well tomorrow.
KJ’s looking solid ! How about a KJ / Harrington final pairing tomorrow ?

gee - REALLY ?
Wow – Judy Rankin really knows her stuff – “it’s not cold if you’re dressed properly.”
Other than longevity and the possibility of a sexual discrimination law suit, is there any reason for her to be calling men’s golf ? She is SUCH a nice lady, but she doesn’t add anything to a broadcast.

wait wait wait
an official just said that Soren Hansen’s inability to make a putt from 18” is the cause of the backup at 10 ? There are 3 groups on the tee and another in the fairway. That’s 40 minutes. Seems a bit far fetched.
Now they’re saying the Freddy Jacobsen’s ball was “occilating” in a BUNKER ??? how the heck is that possible ? He took 15 minutes to play that shot. How about just ONE marshall who is willing to tell him that the ball is in sand – just hit it ! Then put him on the clock.

Just got home from work...
Very impressed with KJ so far; he’s long been one of those you just knew would eventually get a major – perhaps this is his week.
I’m bummed about Duval’s collapse. Always a favorite of mine.
Norman back to +2 after the birdie at 8. Wow.
Message for courtgolf: Due to your having mentioned it, I played Candler Park a couple of weeks ago. Odd little track. In my continuing quest for Atlanta area econo-golf, I intend to hit Sugar Creek Monday morning.

well done
Good job Turn – you can now officially call yourself an Atlanta golfer. Candler Park today isn’t what it was a couple of years ago – they did a lot of cleaning and fixing and reworking, especially on and around the greens. (it used to be like putting on shag carpet) But it is an Atlanta classic and always fun.
I haven’t been to Sugar Creek in a couple of years. Not the quality layout as Mystery Valley, but it’s a fun course. I always enjoyed the walk underneath I-285 between 1 and 2, then around and back underneath to get to 9. There are a lot of fun holes at Sugar Creek.
Next for your list ? Try John White Park, downtown off of Cascade Rd. A 9 hole course with 2 par 5’s, 4 par 4’s, and 3 par 3’s – and some VERY tough greens – for $10 to walk. You won’t find a better 9 holes to practice on. They also have a very active First Tee program.

West Texas
Weird stuff going on over there today. Man, I hate playing in the wind. But like Judy, I’m used to it. I remember many days of having to lean forward into the wind just to make headway up the fairway. Hitting driver, 3-wood, 8-iron to reach a 400-yard par four (seriously – and I wasn’t half bad at that time, either—shooting in low 80s). Not fun.

My funniest wind story:
Playing a fairly new course in Huntsville, Alabama, about 5 years ago. The trees had not yet matured sufficiently to provide for any sort of windbreak. It was April, and a rainstorm blew in. On the Par 3 7th I got my six iron up into a 15-20 mph right-to-left crosswind and wound up 8 or 10 yards left of the green.
Hitting back into the wind and rain with a 60-degree wedge, I took a larger-than-desirable divot in the already muddy soil. The divot flew forward approximately six feet, turned 180 degrees, and hit me square in the face.
Still one of my favorite golf moments.
(For the record, the ball ended up at about 6 feet, I missed the putt, settled for bogey. Which was probably appropriate.)

Scotland wind
I’ve only played in an area with really tough winds like this one time – in Scotland. 420 yard par 4 from an elevated tee box, ocean on the left. The wind was so strong, we had to start tee shots left of the green on the hole running parallel to the one we were playing – about 60 yards left of the fairway. My ball started on line, then blew all the way back to the fairway and rolled into the rough on the right.

and now for something completely different...
...looks like the birdie-fest is continuing at the State Farm LPGA event. Only 2 rounds over par in the top 25. (apparently they didn’t bother working in any sort of degree of difficulty – but you still have to get the ball in the hole)

no such thing as a one handed economist...
day one – Econ 101 – economists always find a way to say “but on the other hand”.
today – Mike Tirico is an economist. At 10, he set Tom Watson up with the question about whether he liked how Norman and KJ played the hole. He didn’t like it, saying that driver was the wrong club off the tee – and he was shown to be right.
On the other hand—Tirico asked Azinger if the 30 minute wait affected how they played the hole. Azinger figured they got stiff and played the hole badly because they were tight.
I think I’ll go with Watson – they pulled the wrong club.
wow – last three groups took 1 hour 12 minutes to play the 10th hole.

My respect for Greg Norman, while already significant...
...is growing by degrees. The tee shot at 14 was brilliant.

'Zinger doesn't get it
He said that if he were Greg Norman, he wouldn’t want to be in the last group with Harrington because everybody would be pulling for him and not Norman.
UUUUMMMMMMMMM – apparently, ‘Zinger the Wise doesn’t remember who Greg Norman was. Every man wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him. This was the #1 player in the world – he was THE stud golfer – Captain Morgan and The Malrboro Man WISHED they had something on Greg Norman – and women would have lined the fairway with their underwear if they they could.
This could be like the US Open on Thursday and Friday – everybody will be surrounding the last group and the rest of the field will think they’re at the wrong golf course. :-)
