A 60 for Paula Creamer
Not a bad way to start a tournament. Paula Creamer opened the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic today with a round 60 - just the fifth round of 60 or better in LPGA history.
She made a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to hit 60, one of nine birdies in her final 11 holes that also allowed her to match the LPGA 9-hole scoring record of 27 on her second nine, holes 1-9. It was just one year ago that In-Kyung Kim also posted 27 on the same nine of the same tournament.
Creamer's previous career best was 64.

the stats march on
ok – as Stu said – this is just the 4th 60, plus Annika’s 59.
It is also only the 5th round of -11 – but the second -11 that totaled 60 (par 71 course). Two were on par 72’s and one on a par 73.
If she has a 63 in her tomorrow – she will break the 36 hole scoring record of 124 shared by Annika and Meg Mallon. Their 124’s were on par 72 courses.

Associated Press slipped up.....again
Kind of actually. One of the players listed as shooting a 60 in the past is Jung Yeon Lee . That’s Sarah Lee today. I spoke to Sarah and father at last year’s ADT, Sarah is her legal name.(She was born in London)

not just AP
Jung Yeon is the name listed on LPGA.com’s scoring records.
Was she Jung Yeon when she shot the 60 ?

Yes
She played as Jung Yeon from 2002-04. The LPGA media guide book for this year has her listed as Jung Yeon. See the LPGA is used to changing playing player’s names. Take for instance Dottie Pepper, she won tournaments as Dottie Mochrie. Look at the LPGA record book, the winner’s listing for Kraft Nabisco says Dottie(Pepper) Mochrie. The LPGA goes back and revises their records for name changes, but the Jung Yeon to Sarah conversion slipped through the cracks. It can make less prepared members of the golf media think Jung Yeon and Sarah are two different players.
The LPGA record keeping isn’t the mess the PGA’s is. Trust me, a record set by George Archer for the lowest putts for 72 holes has increased by one stroke over the years. I have a PGA guide book circa 1988, it says one thing, the current books another. When I informed the PGA of the discrepancy, they say the newer guide books are right.

If I ever write a golf book
It should be titled, Lies, Damned lies, and PGA Tour statistic keeping.

I'm applying for a job
I’ll edit the LPGA’s publications and web site for them – here’s a tough one…

Playoff records section
Of the PGA Tour guide book is notorious so far as I’m concerned. I had a 94 or 95 guidebook that I went through it with a yellow highlighter. Then typed the mistakes, double spaced. The error list ran to 3 pages. A more recent guidebook around 2004 or 05 had similar problems too. I didn’t buy the book but found 6-10 mistakes just glancing at in a Barnes and Noble bookstore. The PGA should pay me to buy the book!
The most players in a playoff for a PGA Tour event isn’t 6 but 10. The Chrystler Team Championship in 1985, a unofficial event at Boca West, had 5 teams involved. The first hole of sudden death was a par 3, and the players hit it all over the place but only Hal Sutton or Ray Floyd managed to make birdie. The only other player in the playoff that I can recall is one of the Edwards brothers(Danny I think).
I’m 47 and my golf memory is slipping. Has there ever been a case of Golf Allzheimers reported? ;)

picking nits
Bill – can’t agree with you on this one – official records are for official events. As you said, The Team Championship was an unofficial event. Do you want to add Fred Couples’ Skins Game winnings to his official career earnings ? Should the LPGA ladies who won the Wendy’s Three Tour Challenge be listed as having a PGA Tour and a Champions Tour victory since they beat the men a couple of years ago ?
Who published the book of records you had from 1994 or 1995 ?

I should have made myself clearer
I know the Chrysler is un-official, but the PGA has abandoned the records of some of these tournaments. They are still part of golf history, and shouldn’t be totally forgotten. Plus I just wanted to show off a little golf trivia I still remember.
The guide book in question was put out by the PGA Tour.
