T-Joh Reaches WAPL Finals
The championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship pits Tiffany Joh against Jennifer Song. The 36-hole final begins at 8 a.m. at Erin Hills in Wisconsin on Saturday. If you are so inclined, you can follow live scoring on the USWAPL Web site.
The T-Joh defeated Lee Lopez, 2 and 1, in the quarterfinals on Friday morning. In the afternoon semifinals, she downed top junior Tiffany Lua 4 and 3. Lua - a very fine golfer who will attend UCLA beginning in 2009 - never had a chance. Our Tiffany birdied six of the first seven holes in that match en route to a front-nine 31. She was 5-up at the turn. Lua gamely rallied and narrowed the gap to 3-down at the 12th, but Joh got one back at the next, went dormie at the 14th, and won it on the 15th. T-Joh finished 7-under through 15 holes. Hard to beat that.
Song defeated Lauren Doughtie in the quarters, 4 and 3, then downed Stephanie Kono (who will be Tiff's teammate beginning in the fall) in the semis, 2-up.
Song is 18 years old, born in Michigan but has grown up and lives in South Korea. Although she is the captain of the Korean National Team, she was an alternate on the recent U.S. Curtis Cup team. She was a quarterfinalist at last year's U.S. Women's Am, and will play collegiately at Southern Cal beginning in the fall.
