Tiger on Track for Torrey

Tiger Woods must be feeling good. He said today that he would play next week "even if it wasn't a major." Hey, you can only sit around the house with Elin, Sam, the dogs, the trophies, the home theater, the back 40 and the three days' growth for so long before you need to get back on tour. How much fun can life with Elin be, anyway?

Woods says he's playing full holes again, and this week he'll ratchet up his workout routine - and his practice to a full 18 holes.

“I’ve been practicing quite a bit,” he said. “I’ve just started to play some holes. I’ve been kind of slowly building up towards that. I’m not trying to take it too hard. My practice sessions have increased.

“Everything’s been holding up well, which is a good sign.”

A healthy Tiger Woods would be an overwhelming favorite at Torrey Pines. A Tiger whose might still be offering twinges, a Tiger who hasn't played competitively in two months? At worst, still among the favorites.

If he can stay out of Sam's way, that is. Apparently, it's not safe to be around her when she's swinging her club:

Woods doesn’t mind when his daughter, Sam, follows him even if she hits him with a club as she did recently.

“The only thing she yells out is “Da Da.” That’s about it,” he said with a smile. “We have a little cut-down club she will drag around. She likes throwing balls at Taz, my border collie. It’s kind of funny to see a 11-month-old and my border collie play fetch.

“That’s pretty funny to watch, but it’s actually one of the coolest things.”

US Open predictions

Tiger’s looking pretty frisky, and maybe even a little antsy to get back into the game – but I’m not going to pick him to win at Torrey Pines…or even Tori Spelling.

Not picking Phil either. He’s been too flaky and way to irratic with the putter.

The second most consistent player on Tour won’t even be at the Open – Kenny Perry didn’t want to go through qualifying.

So who’s left ? Not Stewart Cink – four rounds doesn’t seem likely. Geoff Ogilvy – he has the game, and he has been playing better lately. Sergio ? Please.

My guess is that one of the young guns will step up this year. Maybe an Adam Scott or Sean O’Hair. With three rotating driveable par 4’s, maybe a JB Holmes can get hot. He has the strength to play out of the US Open rough, and has a couple of wins on tour.

I would like to see KJ Choi get his game together, or Vijay Singh, or even David Toms, but I don’t see it happening.

Then again – with all this confusion – there is always Tiger !
