Speaking of Michelle Wie ...
One of her "youngest ever" records was broken this week at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. Wie had been the youngest-ever competitor in a USGA championship, having played the USWAPL at the age of 10 years, 9 months in 2000.
But now that record belongs to Allisen Corpuz, who played this week at the age of 10 years, 3 months and 9 days. Corpuz posted rounds of 81 and 88, falling short of advancing to match play (Wie made it into match play back in 2000, losing in the first round). She is 5-feet tall. She is 111 pounds. She is in fifth grade.
"The common denominator of the very successful junior golfers is they have poise and a maturity beyond their years,” said swing coach Kevin Ralbovsky, who served as her caddie this week. “Allisen is very composed on the golf course. She doesn’t get flustered or rattled. So her demeanor is conducive to good golf."
So, where is Corpuz from? Hawaii, of course.
And where does she go to school? Punahou. As if you had to ask!

where are the WOMEN ?
Come on – there have to be some WOMEN who play golf well out in Hawaii – right ? College players at UH ? A visitor on vacation who just happened to bring her sticks ? How the heck does a 10 year old qualify for a national title like this ? Obviously she has talent – but she’s 5’ tall and hasn’t even lost her baby fat yet.
From my days in tennis where girls turn pro between 12 and 15 – and somehow get ranked and make money (mostly because the older girls/women rarely learn anything new past the age of 10 on the tennis court) I can sort of understand how young girls can beat older women when it is all physical.
But GOLF ? You are supposed to have some sort of mental capacity and experience to play national and international level golf. Is women’s golf just hit and chase, and if you miss a fairway or green par is out of the question ? Too many little girls are getting into national women’s events. And I don’t blame the little girls – I just wonder where the women who are supposed to be able to play the game are hiding.
Ok – this has to be the player in the field with the toughest chance to develop a game coming from a place where you have just enough time to get in 9 holes between blizzards each summer… :-)
