Big Break Kaanapali

Congratulations, Lori, you managed to turn Christina into a sympathetic figure.

I wonder how Lori Atsedes feels now, as the shows air, about all her petty gamesmanship during the filming of the series. At the time it probably seemed like a good idea - she's trying to win, of course. And golfers as great as Seve Ballesteros and Raymond Floyd played games. Seve would "accidentally" jangle coins in his pocket or cough at inappropriate times. Floyd would walk through competitors' putting lines in Ryder Cup matches.

On the final green of an 18-hole playoff at the 1947 U.S. Open, Lew Worsham waited until Sam Snead was over a 3-foot putt before calling him off on the pretense of checking to see who was out. Snead missed the putt and lost and playoff. At the start of an 18-hole playoff at the 1957 U.S. Open, Dick Mayer showed up on the first tee carrying a stool on which to sit while waiting for the glacially slow Cary Middlecoff to play shots.

Nothing subtle about any of that. But none of that was caught on video, or at least if it was, it was never pointed out in broadcasts casting those players as villains. Lori just looks like a jerk. If she wound up winning, she probably doesn't care.

On another note, the editors need to do a better job hiding which golfer is going to lose later on in the episode. In the previous episode, Sam showed up in her interviews wearing some sparkling gown - clearly, she was the one who was going to be eliminated. Why would wear something like that unless it was your last chance to wear it? And tonight, Susan's red, puffy eyes and stuffy voice made her eventual elimination obvious.

Nothing is forgotten or forgiven

Christina quoted in a hometown paper last week:

“She turned out to be an absolute awful person,” said Lecuyer, adding she met up with her recently at a U.S. Women’s Open qualifying event.

“She came up to me the very first time we saw each other after the show aired and said ‘Hey roomie, are we good?’ I said ‘Yeah, that’s fine.’ She’s one of those people I don’t think I’m going to be friends with. We’re cordial, but I’m not going to be friends with her. Heck no. I don’t respect her. Her personality came through and I’m just not a big fan of it.”

previous BB villains

There were always people sticking up for the “villain” (as much of a villain as you can be on a golf TV show) on past BB series’ saying that it was all editing. They said that the “villain” wasn’t really that bad, they just picked out all the nasty things, or perceivably nasty things, that person did.

Lori was obviously the “bad guy” from the first episode when they were supposed to play as a team and she came right out and said that she didn’t like playing on a team and would do it reluctantly.

I guess if you don’t care what other people think about you and you play the games in a truly nasty way, then being branded as the bad guy doesn’t matter. Seve and Raymond had the “gamesman” tag, but they weren’t really hated for it. The games weren’t appreciated, but people liked them away from the course.

What I’m wondering is this – is Christina whining and thinking that Lori “owed” her some sort of loyalty because they were roommates on a game show ? (Be serious) If Lori didn’t say the things she said, would she have been on the show at all other than to “prove” that xxx Golf Channel people weren’t just out there looking for hot chicks ? Lori has some game, no doubt – but take the exaggeration through editing angle into consideration, and maybe Christina is a little thin skinned.

reruns

aren’t reruns great ? gave me a chance to rethink the Lori thing – but first things first….

WOW !! What a rainbow behind the tee in the elimination challenge !!! They are definitely more spectacular in Hawaii than anywhere else I’ve ever seen.

Back to Lori – What I missed the first time through was that she seemed to really enjoy using rules to damage another player – whether she was right or wrong, she was ready and willing to throw the book in someone’s face.

xxx Golf Channel didn’t do a very good job on the video of Christina’s rule infraction. They never showed her ball on the ground. It was definitely not on the ground when she tamped down the divot. Lori “demonstrated” by stepping behind a ball on the ground, but there was not a ball on the ground when she stepped on the divot. It was kind of a weird situation. How do you define the area like that ? The rules of golf weren’t exactly written for a game show. xxx Golf Channel needs to re-evaluate and define the boxes. It IS a teeing ground because you must place your ball in that area – but it’s not a teeing ground because you can’t use a tee. Did Christina tamp down the divot, then place the ball at the edge of where she stepped ? We never saw.

If Lori knew the teeing ground rule, she knew the rule about touching the intended line of a shot. Jingling change is one thing – slow playing someone by bringing on an extended discussion is something else. Magee called it right – that’s dirty pool.

The girls jumping all over Christina at breakfast – then playing like they were sweet and innocent later was about as catty as it gets. A while back, a friend of mine wanted to move in with two other girls – her father stepped in and forbid her from doing it – not because the girls were bad company – but because there was an odd number of girls in the apartment. He told her that anytime an odd number of women spend a lot of time together, pretty soon, there will be a power struggle and a 2 on 1 or 3 on 2 situation will come up – and it’s never pretty. He was right – less than 2 months into it, those girls had ganged up on the third roomie and made her life a living hell until she moved out.

Men and women definitely don’t have the same view of sportsmanship and fair play.
