More Than One Way to Skin a Skins Game
The Telus Skins Game is taking place in Canada today and tomorrow. This is the little brother to The Skins Game, the one that originated back in the '80s with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Tom Watson the original quartet.
The Skins Game is still televised every year, even though only seven people still care. And that seven includes the four golfers who play it. Which must mean that one of the participants' caddies doesn't care ... but I'm sticking with seven.
Nobody cares about the Telus Skins Game, either, except for the fans up in Canada who get to watch homeboy Mike Weir and whomever can be rounded up to fill out the field. And this year, the quintet - yep, they have five - is made up of Weir, Greg Norman, Camilo Villegas, Colin Montomgerie and Fred Couples.
If there's a skins game, Couples will be there. Just last week, me and my buddies were playing skins and Freddie showed up. "Hey, can I join?" Sorry, Freddie, we're not stupid. You kill in these silly things!
But anyway, that quintet - Weir, Montgomerie, Villegas, Couples and Norman. Doesn't that seem a whole lot more interesting than any of the fields they've had lately at the "real" Skins Game? No Stephen Ames. And he's even a Canadian of sorts.
I'd watch that quintet. Maybe they should kill the original Skins Game and start televising the Telus Skins Game instead.
