Open Thread: U.S. Open Playoff

My first check of the action today, and I caught Tiger and Rocco just finishing the seventh, where Woods birdied. Tiger -1, Rocco +1 after 7.

Use this thread to chat about the playoff.

And you might be interested in this list of U.S. Open playoffs. Has all the scores, plus a few interesting tidbits.

Update I: Rocco just missed a short par putt, about 3 feet probably, on No. 9. Ouch. They head to the back nine with Tiger leading by two.

Update II: Hope I'm wrong, but it the playoff may be over after the 10th. Tiger rolled in a long par putt from the fringe, Rocco missed a much shorter par putt. Woods now ahead by three.

Update III: Hmmm, looks like I spoke too soon in Update II. Tiger has bogied the last two holes, Rocco now within one again. Tiger +2, Rocco +3. Did anyone else notice Johnny Miller calling the Buick Invitational the "San Diego Open"? If you're gonna live in the '70s, Johnny, bust out some of those white belts and bell bottoms! You'll fit right in with Villegas, Poulter, et.al.

Update IV: And they're tied with four to play. Rocco had a tap-in birdie on the short par-4 14th; Tiger had a 10-footer for birdie that lipped out. They're both at +1 now. Rocco had done an amazing job today. Two different times he's fallen three shots behind but kept himself in it.

Update V: Rocco goes one stroke ahead with a birdie at 15.

Update VI: Rocco takes a 1-stroke lead to the 18th tee ...

Update VII: We're going to the 91st hole. Tiger birdied No. 18, Rocco parred. Now it's sudden death.

Tiger wins. Par on the first extra hole (the 19th hole), while Rocco bogied.

This ain't baseball Tiger!

Yesterday on the last hole, Tiger kept “adjusting himself,” if you know what I mean. And he just did it again! Cmon Tiger, stop rummaging around down there. This ain’t baseball!

don't get ahead of yourself, Stu

Tiger has had his ups and downs on the back 9 this week. Anything can happen. Only 2 back.

Johnny may get struck by lightning – saying that Tiger CAN’T hit the fairway at 12. He didn’t hit the fairway – but why say he “can’t” ???

Do you think Tiger carries two identical red shirts?

Or can we assume that he’s a little smelly today?

As for Rocco....

He probably picked out a new polo from the pro shop last night to throw under that sweater vest he’s been wearing all week.

JM should teach math

just before teeing off at 16 – Tiger down one shot to Rocco – “I really believe that Tiger needs to play these last three holes one under to force extra holes.”

AMAZING !!!!! How is this astounding intellect just doing television commentary ?

Johnny – I need a little help – 2+2=?

"Hey Rocco, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat"

Yep – for the third day in a row – the 18th hole at Torrey Pines has had a “trick putt”. Nobody seems to know what a “trick putt” actually is – but nobody ever seems to ask Johnny what the heck he’s talking about anyway.

starting at the 7th ?

how did they decide to start sudden death on the 7th ??? why not 1, 17, or 18 ?

Logistics

The 7th tee is right next to 18 green. Plus the 8th green is pretty close to the 18th tee. Creates a nice little loop, not to mention the holes to be played would be Par 4(7th) Par 3(8th) Par 5(18th). Not quite Amen Corner, but pretty convenient and all within a 2 min cart ride to the 18 green for the trophy presentation. It’s all about the TV

makes sense

it still had to make Rocco a little sick to his stomach to hear that his big chance had to come down to the one hole that gave him the hardest time all week.

Gotta work it...

from left to right on that hole. Rocco didn’t have that shot in his bag. The fact that he was as successful as he was on Torrey South without a cut shot surprised me the most.

one and done

how long before the conspiracy theories start – saying that the USGA picked the 7th for the first playoff hole because it would give Tiger the biggest advantage and it was one of the holes that gave Rocco the most trouble.

hmmmm – predictions anyone ?
