Open Thread: Round 3, U.S. Open
Isn't weird for it to be this late in the day - 2:30 Central time as I write this - and still have half the field yet to tee off?
Phil MIckelson is among those who are under way. He's through the front nine at this time and 1-over for the day. I'm declaring Phil's title hopes dead.
Use this thread to discuss play throughout the day.
Update: Phil reached No. 13 at 5-over. A par-5, he had a short third to the uphill green with a false front that slopes severely back down to the fairway. His wedge hit the front of the green, rolled back down ... probably about 40 yards. Hit another wedge, short, rolled back down. Hit another wedge, short, rolled back down. Finally, on his fourth try, he flew the ball past the flag and held the green.
Update II: Tiger opens with a double-bogey. Same score he made to open the tournament on Thursday.
Update III: Ernie just did the same thing Phil did earlier in the day on No. 13 - didn't get his approach far enough up the false front, and the ball rolled back down the hill. Then Els did it a second time. But at least he got his third onto the green. Then made the putt. A 9 for Mickelson, but at least Ernie saved a bogey. He's a +4. If he just holds steady there, he might still have a chance on Sunday.

the big dog
don’t you think that Dr Frankenstein….err…Mickelson has to be kicking himself for his decision to leave the driver at home with the kids ? He put it back in play today, and through 7 today, he’s one over – but that’s six pars and one bogey.
Was it the pressure of playing with Tiger or was it the mad scientist that put his bag together that got him in trouble ? How much influence did THE biggest tinkerer and wedge proponent in the world (Dave Pelz) have on his decision ?

Appleby
What are the odds of Appleby hanging in there and making a run at it tomorrow? Doesn’t it seem like he should have won more?

you'd think so, but...
...there are only so many weeks in the month of January. :-)
I would love to see Appleby win a major – any major – this would be a great one. He’s one of the really good guys on tour, and losing his wife the way he did really set him back.

Prediction
If Appleby wins the U.S. Open, he’ll get an endorsement deal with Applebee’s

But since he just 4-putted ...
Applebee’s can probably save their money.

who writes this stuff ?
it’s’ amazing how suggestable these broadcasters are – the line of the week is definitely “it moves ever so slightly…” (talking about putts) so far today, I’ve heard it four times, and the same phrase has popped up all week on both networks.

OOoooo - that's a good one, too
Tiger, out of the right rough on 4, ball below his feet – good ol’ Johnny, who thinks that 90% of the shots Tiger hits are “stingers”, says that TIger hit a “stinger-runner” out of the rough. COULDN’T just be that he hit a punch shot – oh no – HAS to be a “stinger” of some sort.
Hey Johnny, how about a picture here on the 4th green ? MMm – take a couple of steps back….little further…little further….

say what ?
ok – Rocco is on the 6th hole (I love my DVR) – these geniouses just said that NOBODY in the last 14 groups is under par. But thirty seconds later, Rocco Mediate is the only playe in the last 17 groups to be under par.
HUH ???

double fist pump
WOW !
TIger and Stevie STILL can’t high five each other. :-)
How about Tiger’s “hypo-extended” left arm on the approach to 13 ? (thanks again, Johnny)

I have no idea what to write.
Once again all I can say is that I feel extremely fortunate just to be living in the Tiger era.
Incredible.

Isaac Newton...
...must be rolling over in his grave every time Johnny Miller opens his pie hole. His understanding of the laws of physics is truly mind boggling.
Tiger’s second shot to 15 – opening the blade “absorbs energy” – that’s an F, Mr Miller.
He fails Telestrator Use 101 – feeling the need to circle Tiger’s left knee and then announce that he was circling the left knee.

physics according to Johnny Miller
Balls at rest start to move on their own – Jiminez’ approach at 18 – comes to a complete stop, then JM announces that it will roll down the hill. It boggles the mind.
