Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Round 2: You Know Who

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

A little William Blake for you, to class up the joint.

Speaking of classing up the joint: Tiger Woods. Got off to a rough start today, then went nuts on the back nine. Dropped a sweet little 30 on the field, wound up with a 68, wound up in second place.

Phil Mickelson: Not so much. Phil is tinkering with his set makeup again. As he did at Colonial, he's driverless at Torrey Pines, and carrying five wedges. Teeing off with 3-wood. Torrey Pines is approximately 2,000 yards longer than Colonial, which makes this a curious decision. But if Mickelson hits every fairway, then maybe it pays off.

But even with 3-wood, he's not hitting fairways. It'll be interesting to see if he sticks with it, or puts the driver back in the bag tomorrow. If he's missing fairways anyway, might as well get the ball at little farther down the hole. After today's 75 that left him at 4-over, he'll probably need a 68 tomorrow to get back near the top.

The Leaders after Round 2

Geoff Ogilvy, 69-73--142
Carl Pettersson, 71-71--142
Full scores

Miguel Angel Jimenez had the round of the tournament so far with a 66. There have been quite a few U.S. Opens in the past where I've chosen Jimenez as my dark-horse pick. And he's often teased me but never pleased me. Sorry, Mikey, I ain't falling for it this time.

Phil's "three" wood

According to Scott van Pelt, Mickelson’s “three” wood has been de-lofted to 11.5 degrees – technically, that is a strong 2 wood – OR – an old old old Driver, since the cc’s (cubic centemeters) of that three wood are just about the same as an old persimmon driver. It’s probably still a shade longer than an old driver, but pretty close.

What does all this mean ? Not a darn thing since he doesn’t seem to be able to hit fairways with it, and he can still hit this “fairway wood” 300 yards when he wants to from the tee. Might as well go with one of his regular drivers and blast away. He could be hitting a club or two less out of the rough.

gee - thanks Stu

now we can only hope that Berman or Miller…who am I kidding…Miller reading poetry ??...anyway, let’s hope that Berman or one of the other cliche peddlers doesn’t read WR and pull out this poem during the broadcast.

Wonder what Phil Smith thinks

Wasn’t the whole point of Mickelson hooking up with Butch Harmon to straighten out the ol’ driver? How’s that going?

don't blame Butch

Butch can coach until he’s blue in the face, but if Mickelson doesn’t pay attention – which he clearly doesn’t – then Butch is just wasting his breath. I think that making any kind of permanent changes to Mickelson’s game will take a lot longer than it did for Tiger – and Tiger’s changes took over a year to sink in. As smart as Mickelson is – he is equally as scatterbrained.
