Jee Young Lee Gets a Shout Out - Thanks for Nothing!
One of my faves (and the lovely lass pictured in my avatar) Jee Young Lee gets a nice shoutout from Golf Digest this month. They picked her as one of their "longshots" to keep an eye on at the U.S. Women's Open.
It's nice to see Jee Young getting some ink. But why is she a longshot? Sure, she hasn't won yet outside of Korea, but c'mon, the girl makes tons of money, pops up on leaderboards left and right, and has a pretty darn high world ranking!
To add insult to injury, Golf Digest then rank Jeong Jang's picture and said it was Jee Young Lee. Ouch. Somebody needs to invest in better copy editing!
(Their other longshots were Yani Tseng - you're a month too late, GD! - Louise Friberg and Minea Blomqvist.)

apparently their definition of a long shot...
...is anyone not named Annika or Lorena.

or Paula
Golf Digest, as far as I can tell, is run by a bunch of old white guys (no offense intended to those who fit that description and frequent Waggle Room). As far as they’re concerned, all those “oriental” girls look alike so who will know the difference.

lol
I always get a kick out of reading/hearing things like that – railing on a percieved prejudiced or bigotted group by showing your own prejudice or bigotry. :-)

There may be a pattern
I’ve pointed out a line of mistakes made by Golf World’s Ron Sirak over the last few years involving Asian golfers.
1- Leaving Stacy Prammanasudh off a list of American winners in 2007
2- Leaving Kim Saiki off a list of American winners in 2004
I guess California and Oklahoma are foreign countries.
3- Listing top players in the 80’s to mid 90’s area and forgetting Ayako Okamoto. 17 LPGA tour wins, a player of the year award and membership in the golf hall of fame should have had her included.
I’ve been in the press area at two tournaments.(As a credentialed member of the press) The media behind their backs makes fun of golfers who have trouble with English. How many of these same golf writers speak a language besides English?

Or maybe the photo mixup ...
... was just a photo mixup. Mistakes happen. We all think they shouldn’t at the highest levels of golf magazine publishing, but I’m sure they’ve mislabeled photos of white chicks, too. Not excusing the error, just suggesting that the explanation is much more mundane.
At a newspaper I once worked out, the TV section labled a photo of Bullwinkle as “Rocky.” Now that was one of the funniest corrections I’ve ever seen! But I don’t think it was because the editor of that section was anti-moose.
