Meanwhile, in Asia...
...the JLPGA's Suntory Ladies Open features a possible showdown this weekend between last year's #1 player Momoko Ueda and Sakura Yokomine, who's taken over the top spot this season. Ueda is in third place in the LPGA's rookie of the year race and could join Ai Miyazato in inspiring other 20-something and teenage Japanese stars to cross the Pacific over the next few years. But she trails Yokomine by 4 shots after the first round.
...and the KLPGA's BC Card Classic features a possible showdown between LPGA Hall Famer Se Ri Pak, the #2 LPGA rookie Na Yeon Choi, and the KLPGA's top golfer over the past 2 seasons, Ji-Yai Shin, who's LPGA-bound in 2009 and gearing up for the U.S Women's Open at the end of the month, not to mention the JLPGA's #2 player, Miho Koga.
You may now return to your regularly-scheduled Berman-bashing....

Yokomine opens door: Oyama walks through, with Ueda right behind
It’s hard to tell what kind of tournament this year’s Suntory will be. Is it a showdown between the shockingly winless in ‘08 Oyama (69-69), Ueda (70-69), and Yokomine (66-73)? A race between Bo-Bae Song and Eun-A Lim (both 2 shots back of Oyama) to become the first repeat winner on the JLPGA this season? Or a free-for-all with 26 players within 5 shots of the lead?
All I know is that this is a weird one. Mie Nakata went 75-65 to pull within 2 of the lead but Miki Saiki, Yuri Fudoh, Shinobu Moromizato, and Yukari Baba missed the cut badly. Mayu Hattori went 79-67 to make the cut, while total collapses down the stretch by Esther Lee and Ayako Uehara didn’t put them below the cut line, either.

Oyama takes charge
Shot her 3rd straight 69 despite tripling the 9th. Ueda’s 2 back, Yokomine’s 4 back, and now only 8 golfers are within 5 shots of the lead. Should be an interesting Sunday.

Rawson ties Pak, Shin, and Koga--all 4 back after round 1
Looks like Anna Rawson might be finding her game. Any time you match a Hall of Famer and two of the best players in Asia you’re doing something right. 2 shots ahead of the LPGA’s #2 rookie and 2 behind the KLPGA’s 2007 rookie of the year and current ROY leader ain’t too shabby. Only 19 people broke 70, but 14 of them were at 68 or better and 8 at 67 or better, with the low score being a 64, so if conditions stay nice, we could have a real shootout in the BC Card Classic this weekend!
As always, see the Seoul Sisters.com discussion board for photos and results….
