Amy Yang Is A Winner
And I mean literally and figuratively.
Literally: Yang, 18 years old and non-exempt on the LPGA Tour, won the Ladies German Open on the LET on Sunday, closing out the win with a round of 67. That followed up a third-round 63 that fueled what turned out to be a 4-stroke victory.
Figuratively: After the win, Yang announced she would donate her entire first-place check - €37,500 (approximately $58,000) - to help victims of the Chinese earthquake.
The win is Yang's first as a professional, although her second on the LET. She won the ANZ Ladies Masters in 2006 while a 16-year-old amateur. In seven LET starts this year, she has six Top 10 finishes. Yang has played twice on the LPGA this year, finishing 13th and 35th.

Big Boost
Good show, Amy: This certainly will help the visibility of golf and women’s professional golf in China.
Don't worry, nothing will be allright.

don't forget about Michelle
Wie gave $500K when she turned pro to Hurricane Katrina relief, and has given away about a million and a half since …. lots of good people in golf these days.

wait wait wait
Michelle Wie was in the field – they didn’t just award her the trophy just for showing up ?
Why should we invoke the name of Michelle Wie when someone does something good like Yang did for the people in the earthquake ? Yang gave her entire check – Wie gave a much bigger amount, but she was contributing out of a $20 million bank account. Several other players have done similar things during disasters – there is no reason to bring Wie into it.
Speaking of Wie – is there any working grey matter in her head ? She just played four consecutive rounds under par for the first time in somewhere around three years. Is she happy about it ? Does she have a comment that makes any kind of sense ? Of course not. She’s still a cliche waiting to happen.
"I feel that I left a lot of shots out there; a lot of putts; on the par fives a couple. It feels like it’s coming along. It feels like I’m recovering, getting back on track and getting back to where I used to be."
"I feel a lot more confident about my game. I think a person’s greed means that you always want something more. If you look at my score, 14-under-par, I’m very happy with it but at the same time I could have done better.”
(HUH ?? I felt like the AFLAC duck talking to Yogi Berra after that one. In what dictionary did she find THAT definition of greed ?)
"I definitely won’t go back to the States frustrated. I feel like I wish I made a putt here or there. That’s golf. I’ll go back with a lot of confidence. I know what I need to work on. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the summer."
WELL DONE AMY YANG !! You showed great skill in the win – and great class as a winner.

Michelle Wie!
And one more thing … Michelle Wie! Try not to have a heart attack, and don’t be a hater. Oh, yeah, Michelle Wie!

aaack ! (thud)
just kidding – thanks Bob – I don’t “hate” Michelle Wie (but thanks for the cliche – Michelle would be proud). You’re probably right that I overreacted a little. I don’t really care that she is a kid with more physical talent than brains – what bugs me is the media attention that is lavished on her for no good reason – knowing that as soon as they get bored, or something better comes along, she will be yesterday’s news. Happens all the time.
