"Get out of the way and let them go play, that’s sort of my feeling.
Paul said to me: ‘What do you do?’ I said: ‘Paul, it’s what I don’t do. To me, these guys all got where they got because of their record and how they played. Tell them how to play golf? That’s ridiculous.
"All I do is get out of the way. I ask each guy: ‘Give me who you want to play with and who you don’t want to play with. Who you think you’ll do well with, all those things. And then just go have fun’.
"I don’t know whether Paul listened or didn’t. I think he did listen a lot because we talked quite a bit. What he’s going to do, I don’t know."

the rest of the story
I read the rest of that story on xxx Golf Channel’s web site – Nicklaus made a lot of good points – especially about how players today “communicate”.
He’s not real impressed with text messaging, and wishes that there was a little more old fashioned manners and civility when dealing with tournaments. He talked about always sending a thank you note to tournament sponsors, something taught to him by Arnold Palmer. Too many things that the players could or should be doing are done by agents – and it doesn’t sound like they are done very well. Nicklaus sounds like he misses the personal touch of communication.
Maybe this is another reason we keep getting our heads handed to us by the Euros – our guys just don’t communicate with each other anymore – it’s all done through representatives.
He also didn’t condemn the modern players, saying that this is just what things have developed into over the years. He said that he would be doing things the same way if he were a young player these days.
I kind of agree with him – it would be nice if our guys were more human and less corporate.
