Wie on the LET This Week
Michelle Wie is playing the Ladies European Tour German Open this week. It will be her first appearance in an LET tournament.
“I found at the last tournament I was really rusty and I needed to play in more tournaments,” Wie said. “I thought, ‘Wow, Munich,’ I’ve never been there and it’s a great opportunity.”
I think Michelle has been making some good decisions lately. (Actually, I never had a problem - and still don't - with her focusing on professional tournaments rather than junior tournaments. The bad decisions started with the attempts to play numerous men's events, and the bad decisions got worse when she continued playing those tournaments despite diminishing and then counterproductive returns.)
I also think she's close to a breakthrough. By breakthrough I mean a tournament where she finally displays flashes of her old (as in younger) self. Of course, I've said that before ...

Duramed wasn't good enough ?
So now she’s a jet set golf pro. Interesting. Wonder if she’s taking her 7’ tall caddy. :-)
What I don’t get is that the opinion of the LET is that they are a step below the Duramed Futures Tour. She refuses to play Futures events. The only difference is that in Europe, they are allowed appearance fees.
Do you think she’s really going there with the intention of competing seriously ? Or is this just another trip to pick up a check and do some shopping and site seeing ?

let's see how she does relative to Amy Yang
Yang is #1 on the LET money list and would have won last week if Pettersen hadn’t played out of her skull. If Wie can stay within 5 shots of Yang, she’s doing pretty well on her comeback trail.
I don’t mind her playing internationally (especially KLPGA and JLPGA!) to get back to competitive golf. She could still play the final 6 Futures Tour events if she wants to try to qualify for the LPGA that way. Whether she’ll be competitive with Hurst, Hur, Wigger, and company by then would be interesting to see….

one of the criticisms...
of Wie is that she never learned to win as an amateur. Maybe she’s looked at the competition on other women’s tours and decided the LET would be her best chance to learn that skill.
Another consideration might be that she isn’t a member of any tour, therefore she has to rely on exemptions. Maybe this is the first one that came along.
In any case, playing competitive golf regularly seems a better way to prepare for the LPGA exemptions she has, than spending time on the driving range. CG, given the choice between Lake Geneva, WI or Munich this weekend, wouldn’t you choose Munich too?

hmmm - you buying the ticket ?
SURE ! I’d take the tournament in Munich – if someone was paying for the trip AND paying under the table for me to just show up. I’d also be pretty sure that people would call me a flake and tell me that I’m not taking my career seriously if I skipped a bunch of tournament opportunities on the Futures Tour, then on whim took a paycheck to go to Germany.
She doesn’t have to be a member of the Futures Tour to play in those events, and is not limited there by the LPGA’s exemption limit.
When the season started, she (her coach) came out with the idea that they were going to play their LPGA exemptions closer together timewise so she could get into a rhythm of tournament play. So far, she has used one exemption and that was back in March. Jetting off to Germany doesn’t show me that she is taking anything seriously.

anyone shocked - raise your hand
quote #1 – “"I just thought I needed to play in more tournaments. I found at the last tournament I was really rusty and I needed to play in more tournaments.” Gee – no kidding ?
quote #2 – “My goal is just to have fun and keep my head on straight and shoot some low scores. I’ve never played here in Germany before. All the players seem really fun and have really welcomed me." Nike and her other endorsers must be thrilled to know that they are giving millions of dollars to this bubble headed little girl so that she can have lots of fun. like, y’know…giggle
