Tiger and Ernie's $4.99 Equipment

"The Shop" blog on golf.com has a post titled "Secretive Putter Grips." Blog author David Duesk believes he's caught Tiger Woods and Ernie Els both using a certain Ping grip on all their clubs.

Tiger Woods is synonymous with Nike's swoosh. Thirteen of his 14 clubs are made by Nike, and he's outfitted by the company from head to toe. The lone exception is his Scotty Cameron putter. But the grip on King Arthur's Excalibur isn't made by either company, it's made by Ping. (Woods used a Ping Anser for years as a junior golfer.)

While going through images of Ernie Els recently, I noticed the Big Easy, who uses an Odyssey putter, is also using a Ping grip.

The grip sells for $4.99 at Golfsmith. Something tells me Tiger and Ernie aren't getting their grips off the rack, however.

I wonder what equipment each golfer would be using if the pros weren't getting money from the equipment companies?

old news...

...Dave’s kind of late with this one – every close up of Tiger and Ernie while putting shows the Ping grip (even though the white paint has been removed to disguise it as much as possible). It’s just a comfort thing.

I’m pretty sure, however, that the Ping grip at Golfsmith, or any other golf outlet is not the identical grip they are using. Ping updates and upgrades their grips from time to time – the one Tiger is a using is a model from back in his junior days when he did use a Ping putter. Similar – but not identical. Word was that Tiger bought up a bunch of that grip for his personal stash. You have to figure 50 is more than he’ll ever use in a career.

But – you never know – even Arnie switched from his beloved leather grips from Lamkin to rubber grips.

Do you suppose he has a little golf grip “humidor” to keep them from dry rotting ? :-)
