Phil Mickelson Experiences Growing Pains
Here's a novel explanation of putting woes: Phil Mickelson says his putting has been as good as he'd like the past couple seasons because ... he's still growing. As in, adding height.
"In the last three or four years, through some of the stretching and stuff, I've probably grown a half inch to an inch," Mickelson said ...
"I've known that I've become taller for a few years, but I just thought 'gosh, I'm not putting well.' "
(Whatever stretching regimen Phil has been using, let's hope that Michelle Wie stays away from it.)
So in an era when most players who use traditional putters take length off when they want to tinker, Mickelson has added an inch to his putter's length. He's been working with the new putter and Dave Pelz the past couple weeks and will put the longer putter in play starting today at Wachovia.
