Tony Romo Takes His Swings
Via Waggle Room member BogeyMcDuff's own blog, Texas Golf, I see that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo recently played the Azalea Invitational, a top amateur tournament.
Romo finished 36th - which means that he made the cut, and he also finished ahead of Buddy Marucci, a longtime amateur star, Curtis Cup member, Curtis Cup captain, and loser to Tiger Woods in the U.S. Amateur finals.
Quite a respectable showing. Romo posted rounds of 73-80-69-81. I bet Jessica Simpson was in the gallery during the 80s.
The golf magazine Links had a short profile of Romo and his love of golf that appeared last year after U.S. Open qualifying:
Romo was a 1-handicap at that time. He didn't qualify for the Open, and he hasn't succeeded in qualifying attempts for the Byron Nelson Championship and Texas Open, either. The Links article says Romo has had "limited success" in qualifiers. Meaning, he hasn't succeeded, but he hasn't embarrassed himself either.
I see a Rick Rhoden kind of golf career ahead for Romo. Rhoden is the former major league baseball pitcher who started playing celebrity tournaments, then attempting to qualify for professional tournaments, then targeted the Champions Tour. With moderate success. He's done well in Champions Tour Q-School, and respectably in limited appearances on the senior circuit, but not well enough to earn good status.
Romo is probably well ahead of Rhoden at similar points in their other athletic careers, however.
