No Surprise: No Contest

When match play is good, it's very good. But when it's bad it's ... not better.

The WGC Accenture Match Play isn't quite finished as I write this, but it's long-since over. Tiger Woods is 8-up over Stewart Cink through 26 holes. And this is why you'll never see more match play on the PGA Tour.

Every few years - usually after a particularly stirring Ryder Cup or Match Play Championship or Presidents Cup - a chorus will rise up calling for additional match-play events on the PGA Tour. Sometimes, that chorus even suggests that the PGA Championship revert to match play.

Never gonna happen. Match play produces its share of stirring moments; it also produces its share of duds. Finals that match two golfers who between them have a fan base smaller than ... well, me.

Or blowouts. Which not only depress ratings, but also leave the network with potentially hours of time to fill.

If you're one of those people who'd like to see more PGA Tour match play, give it up. Never gonna happen.

I wonder how much difference back to back 36 hole days made to Cink.  He was admittedly worn out after Saturday's quarters and semi's.

If they changed the format to play 36 on Friday and 18 on Saturday, the finalists would have a little less wear going into Sunday's 36 hole match.

Of course, that won't happen.  Two matches on Saturday draws a bigger crowd...though the galleries weren't exactly enormous to begin with...and ideally a TV audience for more of the day.  The Tour Championship also has a limited field and only 15 tee times each day and a limited number of available tickets per day.

Did you notice how Johnny Miller managed to make things about himself...once again ?  He criticized the 36 hole final format, complaining that a blowout like this leaves a lot of air time with no golf.  The meaning ?  Johnny would have to actually work to fill the time instead of crusing along making lame criticisms and pronouncments on the quality and choice of shots being played.
